Out of curiosity I had a look at page 1 of the thread. The number then was around 18,000.

This has been discussed at length in this thread. A few key points:

1) At that time there were fewer gaming options.

2) More of us who grew up playing Risk were online then in 2011 and wanting to play Risk online and many of them gravitated HERE.

3) Many leave CC and there is NOT ONE single reason; there is a myriad of reasons, including boredom and other gaming options.

4) The complexity of the maps and the display makes this game difficult to play on cell phones and that has likely been one of the biggest reasons for lack of "new blood."

It's 3, mostly. With social media, always online games, actual engagement with players, not waiting over a day for someone to take a turn, and non text, the appeal of CC is limited. Other factors are just people getting busier in life.

I agree, DDS. And the 24 "wait" or time limit is MUCH too long for the younger generations.

I think for them this is Postal Chess for old guys like me, waiting for the Postman to deliver the next move by the opponent. That is WAY too long for me.

I have not looked, but I think there are some alternate sites to play Risk or a Risk type game. For me and many others, this CC site with its variety and large number of maps are great features, and the stats saved for games played and tools are also big pluses for the "online Risk experts."

I also think that this site does not work with cell phones is a huge NO for many younger players. I do not enjoy playing games on my ipad as that requires effort to find the right "screen" to find and then properly engage the features available. For a quick set of moves, my ipad does fine. For complex set of moves on a complex map, I want my laptop and wireless mouse.

It would probably do more harm than good with so few players now. But 12 and/or 8 hour turns would make tournaments much more engaging. I know it's been brought up plenty of times, but so has everything else in this thread

I think 8 hours only works if everyone is in a similar time zone. The lack of cellphone playability would seem to be a missed opportunity.

I don't think the timezone much matters, for the people that get less than 8 hours of sleep, which I feel is common among people I know, you just check in before bed, and once you wake up and then a couple times a day. But a tournament would move along 3 times faster. There's always at least one player that waits 23 hours to take turns. Which in turn bogs down the whole tournament. Not that I'm saying he shouldn't play in tournaments, but he would play in the 24 hour turn tournaments. Just now there isn't a large enough population to keep them all going. So the point is not worth talking about really, except to pass the time.

I think 12-hour turns would be applicable, but 8-hour ones? I don't think so. For a lot of people, an 8-hour turn would mean they have to wake up earlier than they wish just to make sure they won't miss their turns.

What if speeders become available for freemiums? In the past, the Admin said NO to this because it would bring the server down with too many people rushing to play speeders at the same time. But look now, we are not as many as we used to be back then, and not all of us are even willing to play speeders. Just imagine how active would speeder section be. I know it would also mean freemium wouldn't have a reason to upgrade to premium when they can just play speeders all the day. But what if they are given a good limited number of free speeders every month? TBH, I don't know if freemiums are given a certain number of free speeders and still not use them. Correct me if I'm wrong because I haven't made myself familiar with CC recent updates. By recent, I mean the last seven years.

For those that know cricket your idea is a good point … my interest in the sport as a child was lit by the faster paced limited over games and through them I “progressed” my interest and time to the longer form traditional first class/test format.
Basically what I’m saying is that the people who come for speeders will find a percentage heading deeper into the big boys game and some of that percentage taking on membership.

I have worked in marketing analytics/performance marketing for years and have some thoughts on this topic.

I'll put it into a few key buckets:

Discoverability:
- There are no organic content being pushed on social channels to audiences that may be interested (no matter how small those audiences are)
- SEO (ranks are low even for terms like "online risk"), I can imagine they are low for online game terms in general (super competitive space)
- Paid Media (Not sure if there is a paid ad strategy but mobile games especially live and die by influencer marketing and paid ads via google, fb, etc.)

Mobile
- Pretty self explanatory - this is pretty limiting especially with work, vacation, etc.

First Time Site Visitor Conversion:
- When you first land on the homepage you are prompted to sign up for an account before seeing any of the good stuff. Its not super enticing. Would be curious what having a free bot game that automatically begins on the homepage instantly would do for conversion. You could do a pop up prompt wizard for them with pop ups, tips, then ask them if they'd like to sign up for an account.

Also, could be some benefit here for a chat bot/navigation wizards for new players. Can be a bit overwhelming.

I actually am seeing a trend of more and more young people sitting down and enjoying slower games like Chess so i don't think its purely an age thing.

I have alot more thoughts but these are just some.

I like this part. People now are more concerned than ever about giving away their personal information (required for a sign-up) immediately to a site they don't know just yet without even trying or making sure the game is worth it.
