It should have been fine for the king to marry up an American. The one he picked was probably even pale enough.

The problem was she had already married a few other blokes and at the time was still processing a divorce from the last one before him.

Other than volume of husbands, I'm missing how it's any different to the current queen consort situation.

In my opinion, Chuck should have done the right thing like his uncle, step aside and move to France to let his kid prince Willie put on the jeweled hat.

Fun side fact: being Catholic precludes someone from becoming king or queen of England, but any other religious affiliation (including Muslim, Jew, Hindu etc) is fine.
