The uber politically correct should know the difference, yet they toss out political correctness when it comes to fun stuff involving their kids (or kids to be).
In my day gender and sex were synonymous, but that’s not true anymore.
I would think it would be considered ‘wrong’ for parents to predict and record (video) of these events that are pre-determining the gender of this future person. What happens when you have a ‘gender reveal’ for your son... and 18 years later that person decides they’re really a female stuck in a man’s body? Isn’t you posting and having video and being so happy you have a ‘son’ somewhat psychologically abusive?
I agree with the third paragraph but the first two are wrong.
I'm older than you are, and it has always been that sex is a biological concept whilst gender is a grammatical concept. It was true (and still is) that they usually correspond, but it's never been true that they always correspond. As languages change and evolve, the meanings of words shift over time, so the meaning of gender has shifted somewhat and the strength of the correspondence has gotten weaker, but it was never a precise and infallible substitute for biological sex.
Your first paragraph there makes the mistake of lumping all millennials together as one homogeneous mass. The types of people who force their friends to attend gender reveal parties are materialistic Yuppies. They may tend towards the liberal end of the spectrum, but not its extremes, and many of them are in fact conservative. The "uber politically correct" types that protest gender labeling tend to be gay or transsexual, and are unlikely to become parents (at least through biological methods). That both of these groups may be of the same age says nothing useful about them.
I am generalizing in the first paragraph... you are correct. I’m mislabeling everyone from one generation as a certain type, which is obviously an error. That said, the ‘stereotype’ of the millennial (or perhaps slightly older Gen Z?) is the type I’m going for... and the exaggeration is intentional to make a point.
The comment about Gender/Sex being “the same” in “my time” is obviously another exaggeration to make a point. Though these terms did have different meanings 40 years ago they were used interchangeably by the general public and the vast vast majority of people in mainstream America would not have recognized or acknowledged the nuanced difference in meaning. Today there is still quite a large number of people who refuse to acknowledge a difference, though the idea that sex and gender are distinct is somewhat mainstream.
Therefore... acknowledging the terms are different these Yuppy-ish young people having these “Gender Reveal” parties are supposed to be “woke” enough that they know the name is deficient. The fact that they don’t care is bothersome.
The fact that this 50yo man... who was raised Catholic and taught that being ‘gay’ or ‘trans’ is a ‘sin’ and ‘crime against nature’... is more “woke” than these yuppie-ish types is funny.
As the MOST MIDDLE OF THE ROAD person here in these forums I find it immensely amusing when people from both sides of the political spectrum don’t recognize their actions clash with their avowed political opinions.
