Good news we can all agree on

Postby saxitoxin on Thu Aug 27, 2020 1:21 am

The U.S. Government is revitalizing and recapitalizing its program to advance knowledge and teaching of American English internationally.

https://americanenglish.state.gov/

It is important to the success of individuals to be conversant and literate in American forms of spoken and written English versus inferior and archaic forms of English. Many English speakers (e.g. mrswdk, Symmetry, etc.) are part of the vanishing global minority who only know Antique English and are at a disadvantage. With a few short online courses they can "level up" from Antique English to American English.

my english is a mix of american, indian and british... and obviously french too.
I think that countries using a language that has the name of another country is proof of an inferior subculture though. Like you have to be an ex colony that has been bending over to be speaking someone else's language. In Europe we all have our own language, and we basically colonized the world except for china and such, so the world speaks our languages.
You guys should be fluent in Navajo or something if ou truely don't want to be another bend over submissive culture.

The EU will all be speaking English within 50 years. Look at the Eurovision song contest for example and the EU parliament. I have learned a couple of those pointless European languages, simply for getting pussy when I worked there. It was a waste of time because they all speak English anyway.

More good news. Under President Trump, just five U.S. companies — Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Facebook — are now worth more than every single company in the EU combined.

Just for all the people here that have shares in apple, China is looking at boycotting it.

I'm not really a big drinker. I did used to go to bars alone while working abroad to try and pick up birds though. Is that some sort of alien concept to you?

They're going to boycott iPhones and move to Droids? Sure, they can give money to any American company they like.

Double mic drop moments from 2d, the ram just got dimed.

Just as well because until that this thread was just a boring concept executed in an even more boring and dull way.

As a second or third language, I couldn’t agree more. People in general will be speaking better english than today, but that’s it. No one will ever give up on his mother tongue nor stop teaching it as their kid’s first language.
You still won’t be able to be understood everywhere as an english speaker.
This summer I have je his childhood friend that has been married for like 10 years to a brit and they live in london. The guy refuses to learn any french. So basically we all are supposed to speak english when he’s around in France between french speakers... well we do a bit but we always switch to french and hé always complains that je doesn’t understand. English speakers are such lazy fucks when it comes to learning other languages. If you make no effort after so many years, I don’t feel like making any either.. if I m in France and you don’t understand french, I’m not going to speak in your foreign language all the time just because.
It’s like this brit girl I met the other day, she s been living 5 years in Spain and she can t order a fucking coke in spanish... she speaks in english to the waiter ! How mentally lazy can you be? I think it’s a sign of lazyness and disrespect.
Learning other languages will always be a thing. English speakers not making any effort will always be considered lazy disrespectful fucks and will be judged negatively wherever they go for not even pretending to try, even in a 100 years

You make some good points betiko.
But I feel a certain sense of irony considering the French are widely known as a nation where many are too proud/arrogant to learn to speak English.
But yeah, If I moved to France, learning to speak French fluently would be a goal for the first year, naturally.

Lol... too proud or arrogant to learn English? Appart from mental stories people make about cultures they are unfamiliar with... how on earth are french too proud to learn english? A lot of french people are not very good speaking english, but it's basically the case in most latin countries. Also, taking Sweden as an example, you guys have all your english speaking series/films subtitled and not dubbed. You hear way more english than we do.
Also, take LHDD for example. I'd say that about a third of our guys don't have the english level to be posting in english or to understand one of these threads. It all depends on generations, and also maybe if you went to an english speaking country to learn it a bit more or something.
The only place where I really speak english is when I surf the internet. But a lot of people can do it with no english knowledge at all, and the translating technology will be each time more accurate.
Check out some regional languages that are stronger than ever accross europe... you really need to be a very thick british old fart to think people will ever stop speaking their language... and bring it to the EU when no member is an English speaking country? Lol. More like English is about to disapear from the EU

I agree with Betiko about the French.. I think it is pretty funny when people who can't even say a simple greeting in any other language besides English complain when going somewhere. And it happens a lot. "We went to xxxxxxxx and they were so rude. No one even spoke English. It was the worst trip ever." Awesome story bro.

First time I was in France, the closer we got to Paris and the north part of The country where tourists go, the ruder and less likely to help with my bad attempts to speak French some people were. I find it interesting hardly anyone speaks about how rude the Brits and other English speaking tourists are. I watched many English speaking people being jerks in Dieppe.

It's no different from going to New York and not learning English. They will probably be pretty rude there too.

Good luck going to most places in western Canada or the USA and trying to speak French. The lazy English speakers won't help at all, and here they had to sit through French class in elementary school. But French people usually don't do that. They at least learn basic English.

Often I have spoke with a French person who speaks perfectly reasonable English then they apologize for doing it. "Sorry, my English is not very good." I never hesitate to tell them, "Your English is fine. It is much better than my French."

Oh no, Betiko called the ram disrespectful.. He will be distraught. He will likely need to write about being the smartest, hard working, sober person in his room full of guys who caught a bird, to get over that harsh accusation.

I have thought about that many times; about the fact that at some stage (or perhaps many times) there was a meeting somewhere in Sweden. Where it was decided to subtitle instead of dubs films and series, as you say. Whoever was involved in reaching that decision deserves some sort of damn medal.
Those countries that dub have done their citizens a real disservice.
I would consider getting free education in any language a very good thing, English especially so.

I must confess, I don't listen to nearly enough French content here. I keep meaning to but it's difficult to find people to converse with here, so I almost never get to practice speaking it. On the very rare occasion I do they usually want to just speak English and move on.
