lol, yeah - the stipulations were that i was only allowed to take it off when i was drinking beer, eating corn dogs or smoking - and i was only allowed to smoke if someone else in the group was having one. i did put a bit of thought into it, tho - i wore my camelbak & spent most of my time in the casino. still lost, tho...:(

Whenever someone finds out I'm Czech, right away they have to tell me the joke, "Do you know what they call an abortion in Czechoslovakia? A cancelled Czech!" And then they laugh, "HAR! HAR! HAR! HAR!" as if they just said the funniest thing in the universe.

That joke was already old and tired when Steve Martin made it famous in the second season of Saturday Night Live, which was I think '77 or '78 or something like that.

The joke itself doesn't bother me, just the sheer tedium and predictability of it. You'd think after all these years somebody could invent a 2nd Czech joke. When you're Polish or French or Scottish, there are literally hundreds of thousands of jokes about you that people can choose to rib you with. You might even hear a new one every now and then. When you're Czech there's one. One joke, over and over and over again, with every new person you meet. It's a special kind of hell.

I don't remember that one if I ever heard it, but I remember seeing repeats of Steve Martin and Dan Ackroid pretending to be two wild and crazy guys. "Never before has there been two Czech brothers to so successfully cruise in tight pants!"

Llama I remember the stampede setting up the casino temporarily in the big four building every year. Then they finally ran it in there year round until they eventually built the new one in Victoria park. Somehow the new one went broke and the Cowboys bar owners took it over.

Czech, mate.

That's okay for a punchline, but you'll need a setup for it.

Maybe you can host a PBS special, "The Search for the Czech Joke."

mrswdk wrote:'Microagression' is a really shrill term but it is describing a genuine thing. I ask the “where are you from” question ALL THE TIME. Mostly it’s related to someone’s accent and not their color. If people are offended by this they need to chill.

I recently had a couple Craigslist transactions as I cleaned out my garage during Covid and have sold some redundant tools.

One guy was Irish, but he’d been here awhile so I couldn’t place his accent. He had no problem saying he was Irish.

The other guy was black, and also had a hard to place accent. I asked him “where are you from”... he either misunderstood or didn’t want to answer... and said he was from “Newton” (which is a suburb right next to Boston). I didn’t and say “No... where are your ‘really’ from / or where are you ‘originally’ from?”. I just proceeded with the transaction and we got into a conversation about tools. He explained he was a new homeowner (he looked young, maybe mid 20’s)... and I showed him some of my other tools that I felt where useful/valuable.... as a more experienced homeowner I’ve had many different tools and you find over time what’s more useful and what’s more likely to be used once or twice and maybe not worth the investment. (Obviously just my opinion, some people may be more or less handy so needs vary.). That said, this guy seemed to appreciate it and we also talked about Ping Pong (I have table in the garage) and tennis. I spoke to him like a human to a human. If he felt my asking where he was from was offensive he didn’t show it... and I also didn;t press the question. It was just conversation.

The first couple of times you might think that's fairly funny that they assumed that. After that's happened to you 40-50 times it's probably starting to grate a bit. After 100-200 comments like that you're slightly relieved when people don't start a conversation by asking where you're from. When those weird little comments are the constant background noise in your day-to-day life they can start to get pretty tiring, even if each individual comment by itself is no big deal.

So don’t bother trying to connect with anyone ever? Most starting points for conversation are basic and (if you connect) conversation can grow from there. The basic starting points are often related to where someone is from regardless of whether they’re ‘merican or not.

I am constantly being asked "Where are you from?" due to the fact that my accent hasn't modified in the 14 years I've been in the US. The cashier at the supermarket last week said "I love your accent. I could listen to that voice all day!"
Worryingly, someone even older than I am said (when I revealed I was born in London) "Do you remember the Blitz?" I know I'm a bit wrinkly, but really?

If I had 50c for every time someone says "I love your accent" I could pay off the mortgage.

I enjoy being aggressive. Beats not going into the Atomic City Tavern and store.*

Microaggressions are a bullshit phrase for people who have nothing serious to bitch about.

If I don’t know you and don’t know whether your married, single. divorced, or widowed... then I’m not gonna ask about your wife/husband.
Someone who doesn’t know you and does this is just dumb.... an idiot, being stupid not being ‘aggressive’.

If I do know you and know you’re a gay man, then I’m not gonna ask about your wife.
(Or I might if I know you really well, like if you were my buddy, and we regularly busted each other’s chops about various things.)
Someone else who knows you are a gay man and asks about your wife is either joking or an ass.
You don’t need to invent a new term “micro-aggression” to describe someone being an ass.

The term is like ‘workplace bullying”.
Someone invents it to describe a situation where in the past you could just say “He’s an ass.”
Then weak willed wimps start using it to describe other innocent and/or minor workplace conflicts.
Some people seem to enjoy labeling themselves as victims.

Who are you talking to? Because I also said that it's a dumb term on account of the people who say these things not being aggressive.

I was hoping the semantics would be an opportunity for us to bond for a change!

I think you've missed the point. It's not the "where are you from?" it's the "where are you really from?"

I don't usually waste time on YouTube videos, but this one is only 2 minutes and 20 seconds. I think you can afford it.

It's always okay if you're genuinely curious.

It only becomes not okay when it's a gateway to selecting a pigeonhole to so you can assume you already know everything there is to know about the person.

All about attitude.

no. although there is a picture floating around of her wearing a Darth Vader mask, but it's one of those cheap, $6 halloween ones that are secured to your head w/a rubber band.
