You need to replace an existing crop.

One of the reasons we are now one of the world's top ginseng producers is that ginseng likes the same sand as tobacco. As tobacco production has waned, ginseng production rose to take its land. Now many suicidal Canadians, instead of smoking themselves to death, can go to naturopathic healers.

I suggest a similar shift could be made with the wheat country and coca. As more people realize that carbs are toxic waste and turn away from bread, they could turn towards cocaine. Snort themselves to death in a few nights instead of the long drag-out fight with diabetes and hypertension.

No one is saying you have to keep all the coke to yourselves. You have a large southern population base that is slowly being weened off opiates and is actively looking for a replacement. Also you have all the oil tunnels that aren't being used for anything right now, might be an easy way into this market.

My grandmother's second husband probably ate white bread almost everyday of his life and only made it into his 90s. I am kind of puzzled at how supposedly carbs are going to wipe out the humans now.

Yeah I'm a fat bugger from eating too much pizza but I suspect a lack of hard work combined with smaller portions of everything is much more likely the issue.

As usual having said that, I believe there is something really bad in commercial bread these days. I don't think it's wheat.

Just to whet your whistle a bit. There is no doubt that Georgia is hotter. But it is not that much hotter than Southern Ontario (everything north of Atlanta is just like living in Southern Ontario). It should be noted that temperature is not the only factor in these zones. Rainfall and sunshine are also important. So global warming will cause more temperature in the north, but it can never cause more sunlight, so Ontario will never be the same as Georgia.

After we went to Vancouver island last year. I had a good chat with a couple of older fellows at the nursery (plant selling place) on Gabriola island about what people are growing.

We talked about the hardiness zones and once I was home I started looking into them thinking it would help me figure out which islands would be best for gardening.

After a while I realized the zones are partially based on what kinds of trees will survive winter and remain productive.

Maybe that was a factor in those apple trees here my uncle told me about. I wonder if they were being cared for by some older Italian guy who was doing things like wrapping them in some sort of blankets during cold snaps.

I'm going to go look for information on the guy somewhere in the US who was building berms with glass walls facing south. His passive green houses maintained their temperature mainly using geo-thermal.

It's not just duty.

Countries restrict produce from crossing borders in case of disease. It is an attempt to prevent you accidentally wiping out the crops in both countries.

Same with fire wood.
