Ireland is the only one of these three that can be trusted not to behave as a slavish US lapdog. Therefore I have voted for Republic of Ireland.

But they would never make it to the UNSC meetings.

And NO, that's not a set-up to some RACIST Irish joke like "because they'd be hungover." So disabuse yourself of that notion right now.

I mean they'd never make it to the meetings because Irishmen can't read.

Always surprises me when Canada isn't a permanent seat on these things already...

I'm surprised you didn't pick Canada since China have basically bought Canada on lay-away. We are what 20 years away from Xi being printed on their money instead of England's queen?

(I offer no evidence for these extraordinary claims)

Good, because you'd be wrong.

It's true that vast swaths of Canadian holdings are held by Chinese people, but these are for the most part Hong Kong millionaires and the like, who do not trust the central government and are looking for a nice escape square. They are no more in favour of the CCP than your or I. The Canadian relationship with the CCP government in Peking used to be fairly good, but has been declining steadily at least since the TPP began taking shape. The decline accelerated with the Meng Wanzhou arrest, again with the affair of the Two Michaels, again due to Covid, again due to the Hong Kong repression . Right now Sino-Canadian relations are probably at their lowest point since the end of the Korean War.

There's plenty of it available, though. British Columbia is basically China's 24th province -

... CSIS director Richard Fadden told CBC News some municipal officials and cabinet ministers from two unnamed provinces, are being influenced by foreign governments. Fadden then hinted China was one of the countries wielding influence. That position is backed up by Michel Juneau-Katsuya, a former head of Asia Pacific Affairs for CSIS in the 1990s, who is now the president of the Northgate Group, a private firm specializing in corporate security intelligence. Juneau-Katsuya says China has been doing much more than lobbying politicians in B.C. for years in order to influence government decisions. "There is direct evidence that there is much more than just lobbying. There is evidence that CSIS has collected that B.C. officials had been compromised, sometimes with their knowledge, occasionally without their knowledge," he said. [CBC]

... When a group of seven Vancouver-area mayors landed in Beijing in April 2007, they believed they were in China to study eco-friendly development and build trade ties for British Columbia. But an investigation by Global News raises questions about whether the Canadian mayors were unwittingly drawn into an influence campaign aimed at improving perceptions of China and reducing criticism of human rights abuses. Have you ordered chips and received something you did not expect?

Back around 1992 my pal's brother was in Washington state in a diner getting a sandwich that came with a side of chips.

It was before poutine had caught on but.. at that time it was stil somewhat common in Canada to order chips with gravy.

So he asked if he could get gravy on his chips. The waitress was confused and there was some discussion to make sure that was what he wanted. He insisted that it was normal in Canada to get "chips with gravy".

She brought him a plate, on it was a sandwich with, chips covered in gravy.

wait... BEFORE POUNTINE CAUGHT ON.... is it a new phenomenon? I thought it was one of Canada's oldest traditions, like fishing and the name Gordon?
