The Symposium

Postby jonesthecurl on Sat Feb 29, 2020 4:37 pm

...this is the local Greek restaurant. Went there last night for a three-generation outing, it was extremely good. The waiter was obviously not Greek himself, so I said to him "tell the kitchen staff that was para poli kalo (I'd have been more elaborate, but my Greek has grown very rusty from disuse).
He replied "They're all Mexican".

Did you send a Spanish message to the kitchen or continue to impress the male waiter with your tic-tac Greek?

You have a problem with people speaking more than one language, at least a bit?

What really pisses me off is when I'm in Quebec and I try to order in French so I can improve, and the waitress refuses to even let me try and insists that I need to order in English since my French is obviously pathetic. They just want to get the job done; I'm trying to actually learn something. They refuse to even let me try..:(

This happens in Europe too... happened to me and a buddy in Germany.

You do understand their position... especially when their English is better than your average American.

Did he like the food or not?

If he was willing to compliment the chef then it shouldn't matter who is back there. Give it in English, stumble thrrough your broken Hollywood conversational Spanish

It sounds like OP just wanted to feel cool in front of his wife which is perfectly fine but, if he wants to look really cool, the pro move is to be adaptable and make the effort to make the kitchen staff feel special irregardless of the language barrier

I have pantomimed a many of times to show my appreciation. A smile and running your belly with a friendly hand wave transcends language barriers

Eh, that's just me

No judgement. Just passing off the pro move to impress wifey

It's a long while since I spoke French, but I used to be passable. What I found in France was that, if a local spoke no Englsih at all, then my French was perfectly good enough to get along. But if they did speak English, some of them would (as in your case) refuse to hear my French as if it was completely incomprehensible.

Yeah, if people don't have a choice, it's amazing how much they can figure out from eight words and a few pantomimes.
