My father's first car was a 1955 Plymouth. Back then a dealerships had little inventory. Most had 9 at most. So, he had to order his and wait for delivery. His sister picked the color blue. He hated the color blue.

My first car was purchased by my father. 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix. Red paint with gray interior. I wanted a truck.

My first car was a '67 Malibu SS.

If it had lived, it would look a lot like this one:

No, an automatic and just a 327.

Still a rather peppy beast...:)

cool cars duke and kb!

nietzsche you are a liar.

I'm still on my first car lol. it's a 2007 VW eos TDI, black with red leather interior, i have it since 2011 and don't plan on changing. I lived in Paris just after i got my licence when I was 18 and no one has a car there, unless you have a family. people have scooters. So I had my first car aged... 31 when I came back from London.
Image

My first scooter was a 2005 peugeot elystar 125cc that I got when I was 25 and that I sold when I was 29 and I moved to London
Image

My current scooter is a 2017 Honda Forza 125cc

I've been thinking about getting an old car to get my hands dirty on for the lulz, right now I'm looking into old porsche 944, the turbos are like twice the price of the regular models, like 15-25k here in europe as prices are going up, while the regular ones go from 6-10k. But then you get to chose between the S, S2, turbo, turbo S.... I'm not sure getting a second car for the lulz is such a good idea because I don't drive a lot per year, and my daily is also quite much a week end car..

That's just amazing to me Frenchie to be 31 before you get a car. Wild the differences. I always had to drive a long ways to school or work and no transit in the boonies. And rainy and snowy half the year...no go for scooters....lol

I like your rides....I would try and dissuade you from a 944. Especially a turbo...brother had one and it was a basket case AND difficult to work on. May I suggest a naturally aspirated older M3? Fast, comfortable and you can work on it. Similar price range. My son and I have done all the upgrades and maintenance and repairs on his 2003 affordably and it is a beautiful, fun car....

DoD....didnt know they made an SS 327...I love that motor!

I like this thread (sigh of relief)

lol, it's always raining in paris, everybody drives scooters no matter how hard the rain is or how cold it is. Hell, I would rather take my scooter to work rather than taking the freaking metro. I would take my scooter drunk after nights out. I just couldn't do anything without it. I just think that people don't realise how it is to live in a big european city, how hard and expensive it is to park, all the parking tickets you get, people drive like nuts, super agressive. you got to be nimble and have a great acceleration, and be able to sweep through cars and traffic. People that are not from Paris (french people included) are just amazed by the grade A assholes you have driving in paris. So now you can add those electric lime scooters (you call those small things scooters and what we call scooters mopeds right?), the bikes for rent, the privately owned bikes, the electric mopeds for rent, the people crossing wherever.... it's a very special thing to drive in paris. And totally dumb to own a car if you live in paris and work in paris... only worth it if you live in the suburbs and you don't mind traffic jams.
So yeah, people living in suburbs with jobs in suburbs all have cars, other combinations, and if you don't have a full family you need to drive it's not necesairy, people use public transport. you just waste too much time and money with a car. And i was parisian from 18 to 35 with a few breaks in between.
When I had my car in paris i would park it in a public parking renting it for like 120€ a month, 100€ insurance for the car and i would use it like 3 times a month. totally dumb, but hey, i always loved cars since i was a kid and it bugged me to be in my 30s and still never having one.

how much is an old M3 from the early 2000s in the US? here it's like in the 15k€ for one in a so so state. i was with a friend earlier this afternoon who was looking into them. i don't know, it feels like these must old be hard core beaten up.... and i have a very poor image of BMW reliability. How is your son doing with it?

Totally get what you're saying. Like I hear people in New York City don't own cars. Where I grew up it was 20 miles plus to anything....lol.

My boy is a total motorhead like me...been working on our vehicles with me since he was 5 and he loves it.

He's a Beemer fan and knows all the details of all the cars they make. Some are notoriously fucked....some are great. They need the scheduled maintenance much more than say an old Chevy that can be forgiving. And the scheduled maintenance is atrociously expensive at the shop. They wanted $500 plus to do the rear bushings and we did it for $70.

He looked for 8 months to find his car...2002 m3 from Texas so zero rust and relatively low miles and properly maintained mostly. Think he gave 15 grand? Last year of the naturally aspirated big straight six.

It is pristine cosmetically; we have spent probably 50 hours doing shit that it needed and upgrades. That's 50 hours that were free, not $120 per. Also buy parts for what they cost, not doubled at the fucking dealership....lol.

If you don't need the high performance, you can pick up a nice 3 series for 5 grand.

hummm... i'm really not into beamers though. i do like that early 2000s m3 though.
but.... i'm more into 70s-80s cars. something not too expensive, fun and where i could figure out myself stuff and on forums as I'm quite a noob but always loved those kind of stuff, with cheap parts. we don't have the same type of old cars here in europe though so you might not think of a lot of funny gems.
