China trashes the planet

Postby tzor on Fri Oct 04, 2019 8:55 am

Study: Chinese Cargo Ships Dump 73% of Trash in Atlantic Ocean: International researchers estimate that as much as 73 percent of the garbage in the Atlantic Ocean originates from Chinese merchant vessels, Canada’s National Post reported on Tuesday.

China is widely considered the world’s most egregious polluter. In 2018, the country produced more carbon emissions than the United States and the European Union combined. Thus far, their attempts to ensure their country remains habitable have had mixed results.

Young environmental activist Greta Thunberg and several of her peers notably filed a complaint with the U.N., citing the Convention on the Rights of the Child, against Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, and Turkey for their lack of effort against pollution. As China is not a signatory to that convention, it did not appear on the list of defendants.

China's population is roughly 150% of the US and EU combined, so it is totally unsurprising that China's gross emissions are higher.

Emissions per capita are a far more relevant measure. Figures here and here show that the average American person is responsible for more than double the volume of CO2 emissions as the average Chinese person. Put simply, Americans are far bigger polluters than Chinese.

This one's just a straight up lie. China has signed and ratified that convention. Want to know which is the only country in the world that hasn't? The US.

What a calamity. Is tzor going to step on any more rakes or is this thread done and dusted before it even began?

Oh year super well played Nomad, you are really putting the USA up on a pedestal now. Maybe you want to start a new Nato type deal with just USA, Somalia and South Sudan signing on! Somalia can pirate their way into a Navy in no time.

Even better is that although Thor is right that South Sudan and Somalia didn't sign the treaty, both of those countries have ratified it anyway - meaning both legally committed themselves to abide by it (signing is a display of support without any legal commitment). The only country to never ratify it is the US.

So what Thor has actually done is draw our attention to the fact that even the country with the most child soldiers in the world (South Sudan) has more advanced child protection measures in place than the US.

The U.S., Somalia, and South Sudan.

China's population is roughly 150% of the US and EU combined, so it is totally unsurprising that China's gross emissions are higher.

And yet people demand that the United States do drastic things to solve the problem.

Over the past decade, the U.S. has decreased annual carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 800 million tons. This is by far the most of any country in the world, and is primarily a result of shifting coal-fired power to natural gas and renewables. The EU has also made significant strides, reducing its annual carbon dioxide emissions by 681 million tons.

These reductions paled in comparison to China's two billion ton per year increase in emissions.

No as in moving to zero carbon emissions within a few years; never mind that we don't have the technology to completely replace fossil fuels at the moment.
In New York City they want to stop the construction of all steel / glass skyscrapers.
Ban commercial jetliners.
EAT THE BABIES (Oh wait, she was a certified fake nut job ... never mind).
