Brazil slaughters black kids

Postby mrswdk on Thu Aug 29, 2019 7:18 am

The BBC has published an article on the Rio de Janeiro government's policy of brutal and indiscriminate armed raids on Brazil's poorest communities, ostensibly to target drug gangs but in practice slaughtering hundreds of innocent civilians with no consequence:

Luckily Brazil is a representative democracy, so this sort of abuse of minorities is not actually repression or abuse, but merely a political development that the people will be able to correct within a mere 40 years of voting.

The article makes a comparison between Rio's policies and the drug war of Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte, who has encouraged his police to indiscriminately and illegally kill anyone they suspect of being a drug user or dealer, also without any punishment or even accountability.

But Philippines is also a representative democracy, so as with Brazil this policy is obviously okay and definitely not oppression. Oppression is what governments who are not directly elected do.

Also worth noting are America's sky high prison populations, with its prisons stuffed with poor black Americans locked up for years on end for sometimes to most frivolous of offenses. I recently heard a collab artist on a Noname* track describe the current mass detention of black people in the US as being no different to making them swing from a tree.

America is also a representative democracy though - if people wanted this to change, it would have changed already!

On the plus side, I note that Salvini's attempted coup has failed and Conte has formed a new government with the agreement of the Democrats, so at least in one country representative democracy is working as designed.

In five countries it fails, in one country it works - therefore it is clearly working just fine.

Kashmiris mistake their country for a dictatorship and complain ungratefully about the work of their elected government:

Security forces in Indian-administered Kashmir have been accused of carrying out beatings and torture in the wake of the government's decision to strip the region of its autonomy.

In one village, residents said that the army went from house to house just hours after India announced the controversial decision that upended a decades-old arrangement between Delhi and Kashmir.

Two brothers alleged that they were woken up and taken to an outside area where nearly a dozen other men from the village had been gathered. Like everyone else we met, they were too afraid of reprisals to reveal their identities.

"They beat every part of my body. They kicked us, beat us with sticks, gave us electric shocks, beat us with cables. They hit us on the back of the legs. When we fainted they gave us electric shocks to bring us back. When they hit us with sticks and we screamed, they sealed our mouth with mud.
