Yeah I wouldn't consider any of those three to be metal. Maybe hard rock, but not metal. I get that back in the day they were considered metal, but most metal, at least the stuff I listen to, makes them sound like generic radio rock.

Metal nowadays is kind of a joke to be fair. Old guys like Metallica who are a parody of themselves. New bands that seem like a parody of old bands. Bands that consider increasing the noise to be better that the last noisy band.

It's a fun genre to be in to, but people shouldn't pretend that it's anything but backwards looking at this point.

Folk metal is the only genre I still listen to, and even then much more rarely.

Yeah, I remember a lot of people got into Folk Metal in 2019.

Maybe, I think the first Jazz came from Classical though. I think the first Jazz song was Rhapsody in Blue. Blues was a type of folk music totally distinct.

The evolution of music (it is more like the cross pollination) is a complex evolution. "Rhapsody in Blue" was an attempt by the American composer George Gershwin to bring Jazz into the classical music halls. Up to this time, he was mostly involved in Tin Pan Alley and Broadway. Jazz, as a musical form was already over 8 years old by the time this was written in 1928.

I would say that the birth of real "Jazz" happened in 1924. "In 1924, Louis Armstrong joined the Fletcher Henderson dance band for a year, as featured soloist. The original New Orleans style was polyphonic, with theme variation and simultaneous collective improvisation. Armstrong was a master of his hometown style, but by the time he joined Henderson's band, he was already a trailblazer in a new phase of jazz, with its emphasis on arrangements and soloists. Armstrong's solos went well beyond the theme-improvisation concept and extemporized on chords, rather than melodies."

This approach to improvisation and solo work (which eventually would become a tag team solo match for a given song between the various instruments) is really the fundamental key to Jazz as a distinct genre.

Fine, my favourite American genre, honestly, is the art of the cover. I really love hearing familiar songs in different styles. Whether it's something as simple as sampling, or even a so called re-mix with unnecessary rap, or a mash-up... they all make me smile. Re-invention, as F. Scott Fitzgerald pointed out, is a great point of the North American experience.

I have this opinion about jazz. I like some of the old jazz greats and swing and big band stuff, but I don't think I've ever heard modern straight jazz that didn't sound like the musical equivalent of some art-house film devoid of quality but with all the trappings. Just utterly tedious.
