Roast Everything

Postby DoomYoshi on Sun Mar 03, 2019 2:58 pm

So, the winter is coming to an end, which I love, but that means I can't use my oven anymore, which I don't love.

This past winter, I've basically cooked everything the same way. Put it in the oven and wait (sometimes I even turn the oven on).

It's amazing what you can cook this way. Basically, I started using this method to cook foods that were just slightly past their prime, and now I am almost prefer it to all other cooking.

Things to be roasted (that you might not think about):
tomatoes
peppers
mushrooms
apples (even better stuffed with oatmeal and sugar, like a type of crumble)
lemons
beans
perogies
grilled cheese sandwich

And why, exactly, can't you use your oven year round?

Your epiphany made me laugh....thanks!

In the summer if we use the oven it can make the house a bit too warm. Even for my wife who likes to claim it's never too warm.

The stove top heats up the house just as much. So you guys just don't cook? And I take it you don't have AC? And when in the actual f*ck does it get hot in the great white north??

Ps...yosh, I have a 4ecipe for Ugly Tomatos that simply roasts at low heat for hours and they caramelize...killer. Apple butter same thing.

Done all the cooking and canning for our family for 30 years

I usually use a stove top for much less time than the oven. Sometimes we get to go out because Mrs dimes doesn't want the house heated up. Sometimes it's an excuse to have sandwiches, one of my favorites and something my wife reluctantly suggests to keep the heat down from cooking.

I want to build an outdoor kitchen but it would be buried in snow half the year plus it's lower down on the to do list.

Hot is relative and of course we don't have airconditioning in our house. It was a huge luxury until this century when suddenly everyone started installing it.

Probably the real cause of global warming. Taking the heat out of all the buildings and blowing it on the outside thermometers.

Doom get a crock pot. I do a lot of roast beef and chicken in ours come summer time.

Don't tell her but I can keep the heat managed a bit with a fan blowing out the kitchen window with air coming in from an opened window on the shady side of the house. Cooking is not much of a factor then.

Number 1: I most likely live south of you Koolbak.

Number 2: the summer is barbecue season.

Number 3: I do have air conditioning. It can't keep up in the summer because half the house is south-facing windows.

Sous vide is for hipsters. It's slow cooking for morons. Expensive tools for silly fools.

Expensive? cost like 50$ and all you need is bags, water and power. A quality saute pan costs more. I'm not saying everything should be sous vide, but it has it's place. If you actually care about the flavor and texture of what you eat, maybe you've just been doing it wrong and you should reconsider

Hello, mook. Did you mean $50? Things must be so confusing in your world. Just buy a good pan and learn to pick a good cut of meat. Much cheaper than sous vide. Or, ya know barbecue it.

A piece of equipment that costs less than the steak you cook with it seems expensive to you?

Then mention BBQing as a less expensive option... have you ever purchased a BBQ for less than $50? What's a good pan cost in your world? Does someone else do your shopping for you?

Sous Vide Immersion Circulator In Black - $42
Lodge Cast-Iron Skillet - Amazon $72
Weber Original Kettle 22-Inch Charcoal Grill - $109
All-Clad Dishwasher Safe Fry Pan / Cookware, 8-Inch - $119
Cuisinart CGG-240 All Foods Roll-Away Gas Grill - $185

Good pan- probably £12, so maybe $15 at most, or as you would put it 15$.

Oh by good pan you mean a piece of shit... and by BBQ, you meant gather wood in the forest and cooking food over it?

Is your shit pan shaped? It might be dense enough at least to take a flame, but somehow I doubt it'd be able to prepare anything close to a good medium for argument. Your stuff is neither rare, nor well done.

What Symm say and what he means:
"buy a good pan" = buy the cheapest pan you can find, which is still over $20 on Amazon. A good pan like all-clad is $70 and up
"Much cheaper..barbecue it" = $200 is cheaper than $50, I can't count to 5
"Expensive tools for silly fools" = I only learned one way to do something so it must be the best way
'Learning to cook- free" = learning to cook well is something I'm incapable of
