President Polk sent President Bravo a cheque for $14 million (purchase). Bravo agreed to cash the cheque in exchange for Polk not ordering Mexico City burned to the ground (motivation).

If Mexico wants to buy California, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico back they just need to give us our $14 million back (compounded at 7% interest over 170 years = $14.3 Trillion), plus reimbursement for all infrastructure built since then (highways, etc.). Just call it an even $20 trillion.
