How much is 'global warming ', costing you?

Yesterday while shopping I couldn't find the dog food I normally buy. After a thorough search I found it, in new packaging. Gone is the tight plastic wrap that it used to come in and has been replaced by a thin box of cardboard type of stuff. I also noticed that 6 tins had all of a sudden went up in price by 65p. Surely that box can't cost 65p? Or maybe they've changed the recipe to produce less methane from my dogs arse too.

Has anyone else noticed repackaged products bumping the price up in the name of being environmentally friendly?

Nope. My 40 year old truck doesn't have any new packaging. Just think of how much benefit I'm doing the environment by not recycling cars. Oh....and after 30 years of having dobermans, I am done with dogs. So there's that savings too. Feeling downright chilly.

There is a grocery store somewhere in britain that has zero plastic wrapped product.
If they want to sell the product they contact the manufacturer and tell them they have to change their packaging from plastic.
Im hoping this catches on in canada. Very popular place.

Plastic is so overwhelming now its in our food supply.

The prices increasing has been going on for awhile, smaller packages and jars and seemingly small price increases.

Pickles I like went up 25% and size reduced about the same. Lots of examples. Might only be a few pennies but the % increase is big.

Electronics dont count, they continually drop in price as tech advances, but food has gotten expensive for minimum wage earners and fixed income people.

I was reading a few years ago, we can expect what we want to drop in price, what we need will increase.
That seems to be whats happening.

Also, some assets will drop in price as people are maxed out on credit, property has been slowly decreasing in value for a year or two now.

When the next market crash comes, everything will be thrown out with the bathwater as investors raise capital.

If a recession happens, which is likely, gold will preserve purchasing power but cash will be king.

Valuable assets will sell for pennies on the dollar to anyone that has the cash.

Thats the theory anyway.

So,no, I havnt seen any price increases due to environmental reasons.

I don't see any reduction in the value of property, on the contrary, but Britain is running out of space. Canada doesn't have that problem.

I remember a few years ago when they reduced the size of chocolate bars and other sweet products, but the price remained the same. Maybe I just have a sceptical mind, but I sometimes think the government does things to put more money into the pockets of corporations, while telling people it's for their own good.

That's got to be a diesel, not much point in having a petrol pick up. So it's not that great for the environment but that conclusion might change...again.

I've got a red Staffordshire bull terrier, brilliant dogs and definitely don't deserve their reputation. Hell of a wing man too, the birds love him. Never had a Doberman, always seem to be aloof to me.

I assume when you say old truck that you're referring to what we in England call a pick up. Which is a working vehicle, petrol engines don't have the pulling power of diesel.

I have no idea what 502 cid gas is. Propane? Some people convert their gas engines to propane, a little loss of power but cheaper fuel and wear is reduced.

Kool, you didnt say what kind of a truck you've had for 40 years,flat bed,fire truck,semi,tow truck, lots of dif kinds of trucks, must be a challenge finding parts.

Thats a long time to own the same vehicle.

502 cubic inch displacement gasoline motor. No it doesnt have the TORQUE a diesel has, but it has an assload of horsepower (over 500) as I built the motor fairly aggressively. Sounds a HELL of a lot better than a diesel too, which I love ;o)

I worked in the building trade for almost 30 years and tbh I've never known any pick ups to be petrol. Maybe you call them something else in Canada too. A pick up here is like the front of a van with a long wheel base and a rear that can unload a few tonnes of sand,gravel etc

We certainly do have our own preferences. I prefer speed and comfort. I drive a Vauxhall Astra 1.8 turbo. Doesn't look like much but the road holding at speed is excellent. Small engine for Americans but it gets over 130mph no problem. I've never seen the point in the American car's that have 6L engines but I suppose petrol is cheap there, so why not waste it lol

Respect due for building your own engine and still going strong after 40years. Outt of curiosity, what's the mileage and Can you work on modern engines?

I owned a 68 ford mustang, 289, hot rod, tail end was too light, fishtailed off the line.
Could never find a 302 for it, o well.

Ram....mileage SUCKS...lol. Luckily I only put about 3000 miles a year on it. Loaded, empty, city, hiway, doesnt matter. 8 mpg. But going to shows or going camping, I can easily do 70 up steep long grades with 4000 pounds of crap in it.

I do almost all our maintenance. Taught my son too. Have saved probly 5 grand in the last year. He has a 2002 cherry M3. We've done everything on it; vanos rebuild, intake gasket, all bushings, welded subframe, all running gear. Pain in the ass but I refuse to pay mechanics

I think the fastest shortcut to finding a real cost for climate change is Homeowners insurance. In USA it's is required, and goes up every year with insurance companies generally blaming alot of the increases on climate change.

Knowing how to repair vehicles saved me fortunes over the years.

Im too old to do the work now so, I own beaters, best I can buy for under a thousand, they last me 2-3 years on average.
Altho I have owned a couple that lasted 6 or more.

People laff when I say "i have a tire losing air, time for another vehicle"
Tires around here will cost 4-5 hundred for new, a whole vehicle is about a grand. why buy tires?

The chrysler I own now started dripping oil, so I stopped putting oil in it, why mess up the driveway?
Been months without adding and its still going.

Well, maybe my next one will be new, finding a good beater is actually a bit of an effort, gotta look at about 10 vehicles, that might be a bit much next time.

I've owned a ton of disposable cars. Know exactly what you mean. And no car payment and insurance cheaper. I'm just too damn stubborn to have a car payment, and I do love my truck.

In Canada, don't you have to do some kind of annual safety inspection where the government forces you to fix any mechanical shortfalls? I would hate that....

Ah. A buddy moved from BC to NB and got porked on the vehicle inspection thing. That's why, due to the move. He's retired RCN so it hurt and seemed excessive to me.

Like the DEQ here that you have to pass all kinds of tests every year in order to have the right to pay the excessive registration fees. I register my truck at my cabin in the boonies...its outside if the DEQ zone.

Yeah, there are still four provinces that only require inspections for out-of-province vehicles: BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Quebec.

Manitoba, Ontario, and Newfoundland require safety checks any time a vehicle changes hands.

Nova Scotia requires a safety when the vehicle changes hands, plus every two years thereafter.

P.E.I. and New Brunswick require annual safeties whether the vehicle changes hands or not.

I guess I overstated it a bit when I said that "most" provinces require safeties. A majority do, but four out of ten still don't, so that's fairly significant.
