Check out my band

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQj4a6LZ2kE

This is my band's first recording ever, we used a karaoke machine which oddly enough added some distortion and also we used my moms pocket pc to record it off that and get it on the computer. Even though we don't have the best equipment we really wanted to get our sound out there, and this is what we came up with.

You can check us out on myspace here

Despite the difficulties and poor equipment, I think we're pretty good.

It will have a vocal processor with extensive effects. The effects should change according to the song.

If you have a less expensive unit and don't have a song selected I'm not sure what effects are choosen or if you can change them.

Some of the real high end units will actually change the tones of a voice to match the artist that recorded the version of the song you are performing.

That's partly why sometimes you will have a person that gets real good at singing Karaoke yet be pretty bad at singing without the machine.

The higher end ones will sometimes also be adjustable, so the person running it can remove some of the affects to let a better singer's natural tones come through.

This is also why recording artists seek out particular engineers to record them. Once you have a rough CD completed it can take weeks or in the case of one Def Leopard CD years to have effects added.

Sometimes you have a band use someone particular and they end up sounding a lot like other bands recorded by that person.

The effects on that song work pretty good with it. Kind of wolf mother sounding to me, a modern take (partialy digital) on the seventies natural tubes being overdriven distortion, which partially developed from guys turning up their guitar amps too loud.

We used DJ's digitech to get better guitar recordings and now its really bad for vocal's, but UCAbears said we actually weren't to bad so I figure our new songs are worth a listen. Quiet Tragedy is more of a ballad type and its the first song of ours where the lyrics weren't written by our normal lyric writer. It was also recorded the day it was written, but we are quite proud of it.

You should check it out.

don't worry its not a lemon party and is safe to click on.

Just sayin.

That's where splitting tracks comes in. If you record vocals seperate from the guitar then you can use different effects for each to make them both as good as they can get.

In the old days (ten years ago etc.) you would have a wider tape with several recording/play back heads. eg. 8 for 8 track recorders (Lenny Kravitz still uses that kind of thing, he actually purchased all the equipment from Abby road or some studio the beattles used and installed it in his studio.) The sound engineer would record the raw tape with little to no effects and add effects to them as he mixed them down to two tracks to make a final stereo recording. Now you can use the same concept only instead of physically splitting tracks the soft ware does it virtually.

You can use a seperate microphone for each track if you want to use them all at once and record all the tracks live. Or you can use a board with as many microphones as you need to mix them for say drums where you might use several mics to place all the drum kit on a selected single track.

If you seperated the recording of each thing you could record the first track usually drums for tempo keeping. Then play back the recorded tracks while recording the next part on a new track. Sometimes this would ruin a great live song because you would not be playing it live with everyone else in the band.

that is actually what we did, but the problem with the digitech is it has no effects or lack of effects for vocals which makes it near impossible to have good sounding vocal tracks.

So can you run the vocals through the karaoke machine (or some other precessor with effects) before they get to the digitech?

I'm not sure if the karaoke machine has 1/4" outputs, because I don't have any xlr cords. or xlr microphones which would solve all my problems.

Decent xlr cords are not much more than 1/4inchers. Go invest in your future.

The mic might be a different story. e-bay?

well on samedaymusic we found a mic and stand for like $15 and we were planning on ordering possibly a pa so we could get free shipping, we just are both broke since i've been nearly out of work for a month and getting very little hours and am just starting a steady job and he quit his job because he's lazy.

On another note we got a music store up so if you like our stuff you should support us its only $1 and you would be helping a band get started.

Good luck to you Kyle...don't let anyone discourage you from putting out your sound. Hope you find a lead singer that can compliment the rest of you.
