Sports chants

Postby mrswdk on Wed Oct 25, 2017 5:12 am

Just wondering if the sorts of chants/shouting at referees and players that you get at (actual) football matches are unique to the sport or happen everywhere.

For example after Sol Campbell left Tottenham for Arsenal, Tottenham fans started singing this at games:

Sol, Sol, wherever you may be
You're on the verge of lunacy
And we don't give a f**k if you're hanging from a tree
You're a Judas cunt with HIV

(to the tune of Lord of the Dance)

In my mind fans at baseball and American football games probably just groan and say stuff like 'jeepers!' when players from their own team mess up. Maybe a loud 'come on!' if they feel the referee has unfairly penalized them. Or am I wrong and baseball/handegg fans are equally capable of organized aggression/racism/homophobia/etc.?

They're capable of organized aggression to be sure, but I don't think they're capable of coming up with something that actually rhymes like that.

Aggression towards officials is limited to spontaneous booing. A variety of safeguards are in-place to protect officials: (a) regular rotation so no official becomes too well known, (b) it's prohibited in almost all American sports to show an in-stadium replay more than once; showing a replay two or more times in college football is a 15 yard penalty for Taunting the Official; (c) etc. However, there is plenty of organized vocalizations other than that, cunt.

First they went after the crowd-sourced poets, but I said nothing, for I was not a crowd-sourced poet...

We tend to to simple chants against the refs "You Suck."

All the long ones are for the team.

NYC, NYC
We are NYCFC
From the Bronx up north
Down to the battery
We are NYCFC

Odd fact. A NYC Metro Card is yellow.

College Hockey chants can get pretty creative.

At Hockey East matches at least (probably at most college hockey matches) each school brings a small band that can help lead or cheer said matches. I guess it's a bit more organized than European Football, in the sense that that band is a school sponsored organization. I know that at European Football matches they often have drums or other instruments in the end-zone / bleacher seats.... and those guys attend games for years and years... the school bands are rotated with completely new membership every four years.

So if I’m getting this right, at English football people chant stuff like ‘you’re a Judas cunt’ and ‘Ian Huntley is our friend, he kills scum fans’, while at American sports there are school marching bands and chants like ‘we are the yellows’.

In Edmonton they chant "Nuge" which rhymes with boo, but is a compliment.

My high school had an official school song which was shamelessly plagiarized from Harvard's official song.

So, no.

I'm from Philadelphia.

My favorite chant is "asshole" at the referee/umpire - any sport, hockey, football, baseball, basketball.

...while in line at Dunkin, or Tops or walking down the street, or driving a car, while in the courthouse, on the toilet, picking the kids up at school. At some point he becomes less like a chant and more like Tourette's.

Here are some R.P.I. chants about our other colleges.

Brown University: "If it's Brown, flush it down!"
Yale University: "Harvard rejects!"

Still doesn’t quite compare to football fans taunting rival teams about players of theirs that died.
