Lyndon Baines Johnson 1963... "These Negroes, they're getting pretty uppity these days and that's a problem for us since they've got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we've got to do something about this, we've got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference... I'll have them {XXXXXXX} voting Democratic for the next two hundred years".

The Democrats have been the party of hate since ... they lost the Civil War. There are two pillars of the Democratic (Originally the Democratic-Republican) party and they are hate and dependency. Originally the later was created through a political welfare system designed to get newly arrived immigrants on the side of the Democratic Party (look up the history of Tammany Hall in New York City). In fact the whole history of the party consists of a series of different dependency groups and a system of hate that cemented their loyalty to the party. They became the "useless idiots" for the party.
They ceased to be "useless idiots" when two conditions were generally met; they start to take actual control over the party (The 1924 Democratic National Convention, also called the Klanbake) and when another set of useful idiots could be found (the "New Deal" which placed the African American community into a state of dependence, fueled with a growing hate industry in direct opposition to the leaders of the community such as the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr).Lyndon Baines Johnson 1963... Except, the Dems and Repubs have basically switched ideologies since Nixon. To claim otherwise is to be blind to the obvious. And ignoring history.
And, fyi, both parties suck. The GOP has turned its back on the likes of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Ike Eisenhower, and even freaking Reagan (and how people can even idealize Reagan, is beyond me, even going back to when I was just a mindless GOP drone). They're now the party of empowering the filthy rich and corrupt while screwing over anyone not making 6 figures a year.
And the Dems aren't the Southern "good ole boys" anymore. That much is obvious. Rather, they're more SJWs then anything and out of touch with people in general.

Polls show that most Progressives, indeed 60% of U.S. citizens, want a new party. A convergence organized by close to 100 of Sanders’ former staff members in coordination with the Progressive Independent Party [PIP] and Socialist Alternative, will be held on September 8-10, 2017, in Washington DC. Progressive groups and individuals from across the country will meet at American University to discuss forming a new supermajority Progressive party — one moreover that will end corporate control of our government by backing only candidates who refuse corporate cash.
