Coming from a background studying the 17th century when "Tory" and "Whig" really became political terms, Tory politics were far more "libertine" than Whigs'. Some stuff just doesn't easily translate across the centuries (let alone into "ancient" times). Indeed, I'm not really sure which "Utopian" ancient thinkers you're thinking of- it's not my field, but maybe you're thinking of something like Plato's Republic?

You seem to shift around a lot in your history to justify your arguments though- in terms, concepts and dates. It seems a little like cherry-picking to me.

Then you need to explain to me the difference between liberalism and socialism, because these two terms get mixed up so much that it's confusing. Over here liberalism still means the same thing it did centuries ago.

Socialists in the turn of the 20th century coopted the term "progressive" because it sounded like they were for "progress."
Once that failed like a ton of bricks (with the President going back on his campaign promises to get the US involved in the Great War and almost into the League of Nations) the term was changed to "liberal."

So for most of the 20th century in the US, the term "liberal" meant "socialist." But the deception doesn't end there, originally the Democrat's color was "red" but since they wanted to hide their socialist roots and not be labeled with the "Communists" they had the mainstream media change the party's color (for purposes of identifying which state leaned toward which party) to that of blue. So not only do words no longer mean what they say, even colors no longer mean what they mean.

It's really complex to explain because the socialist / progressive movement that disguised itself as "liberal" started out like a vampire going from one political party to the other in order to survive. The first major progressive in the US was Theodore Roosevelt at the end of the 19th Century with a presidency in the first decade of the 20th. He was a Republican although he tried to form his own party, the Bull Moose.

It then pops up in the guise of Woodrow Wilson, from the Democratic party. A lot of the fundamental elements were formed during this period. A critical key element (even though it is technically a work of "fiction") that describes the early progressive mindset is "Philip Dru: Administrator: A Story of Tomorrow, 1920-1935" written in 1912.
