It's a sandwich if you add a veggie in it.

This is not a sandwich-

But
It can be argued convincingly that this is a sandwich-

Your absolutely right!

BUT, cheeks can be interchanged from top or bottom. This gives more variety and choices.

Oh please. If a hotdog's a sandwich, then so are kebabs and hamburgers.

Hamburgers are definitely sandwiches. When you go to Burger King and ask for a Whopper or whatever, the girl at the window says "Just the sandwich, or the combo?" Clearly their training classifies all burgers as sandwiches.

Kebabs? Not the same thing at all.

Why? Because it's simply a different kind of bread? Or is it because it's a different kind of meat?

I made an open faced hotdog and salami on wheat sandwich for lunch today. With brown mustard of course.

Maybe we're talking about something different. Kebabs to me don't involve any kind of bread. They are pieces of meat and peppers impaled on a stick.

In much of Europe they are served in a pita wrap like a Donair here. Sure, I can get a platter with Donair meat, no pita, but if I said, "Hey lets get donairs." I think you would expect it to be served in pita bread.

So the next questions might be. "Is a wrap a sandwich? How about a burrito?"

Donair? Is that one of those American airlines that overbooks and then beats up passengers when it wants them to get off?

No, donairs are Canadian, like a kabob but with different meat and sweet sauce.

You ever ride on Ryanair?

No, on Donair, if they're overbooked they make you an offer you can't refuse or you find a horse's head in your seat. If you try to leave the flight, they drag you back in.

Yeah, a donair is a wrap, so of course if you serve donair meat without the pita wrapping it's not a donair any more.

However, a kebab is definitely a skewer. The word kebab is derived from old Turkish word meaning sword or dagger. It definitely refers to something impaled on a skewer. Yes, I've seen places advertising "kebab wraps" but that is an oxymoron. If it's a kebab it's not a wrap. "Kebab wrap" is just linguistic butchery, the kind of thing George Carlin would shit all over. Just because some marketing asshole decides to mutilate some words doesn't make it right.

I would say "no". Reportedly, the Earl of Sandwich ordered his servants to bring his meat in between two pieces of bread, so I think something wrapped in just one piece of bread doesn't qualify.

Also, to be really a purist, I think there are additional qualifications. The point of the good Earl's culinary endeavour was to eat without interrupting his card game. The point of the bread was to prevent his fingers from getting greasy. Therefore, I think to qualify as a sandwich something must be dry enough that it doesn't allow you to get your cards dirty. Something dripping with tomato sauce like a burrito or dripping with mayonnaise like a wrap would be disqualified. Also, a sandwich must be small and portable enough to be eaten while playing cards. Something massive like a submarine "sandwich" probably isn't really a sandwich, either.

But most people don't eat a kabob off the skewer. Though some might. You remove the meat and vegg to a plate then eat the food.

Also you just removed Whoppers from your list of sandwiches, because nearly every whopper I have eaten, had ketchup and mayo pouring out of it.

In parts of Briton I am fairly sure you could only get kebobs in the form of a wrap. Typically from a shop that specialized in them, or from a counter in a convenience store.

Would the menu where you are getting kebob, list it like that or would there be a second word such as, "Shikh" before it?

I was at a restaurant on Wednesday with my kids and they had Shikh Kabob on the menu. As you say it would not have come with any bread.

People only strip the meat from the skewer when they're eating kebabs in a restaurant. If you're at a BBQ or eating on the street people just pull the meat off the skewers with their teeth.

There is no such thing as a Donair kabob in Canada. In the maritimes you might get beat for asking for one.

Dukasaur's ignorance about your version of a kabob is the same as your ignorance about donairs. Because you nearly can never find what you know as a kebob here.

The meat in a Donair is a rather large spiced loaf, cooked on a vertical spit then sliced from the outside cooked layer, before being placed in a pita, with lettuce, tomato, onions and sweet sauce.

Yeah, now that you mention it, Burger King is engaging in false advertising! We should file a class action suit and make some real money!

I don't think shish kebab is different from kebab. I suspect it's just an expression that's being subjected to shortening through linguistic drift. Googled both and found no difference in the definitions.
