NEED WATERPROOF OPTIONS

Postby saxitoxin on Sun Apr 23, 2017 10:17 pm

I have a storage unit in which several delicate items are stored. I just discovered it, somehow, became flooded. Fortunately, said items were not impacted (though some other, less important items were).

However, I now feel I need to take extraordinary measures in the event of a future incident (obviously, I'm changing facilities).

Can anyone recommend a truly waterproof storage box? Not like these Rubbermaid plastic storage bins you get at Target but something that can be totally sealed. They need to be larger-sized, though. I'd prefer not to spend a million dollars for a Pelican box.

If you have an estimate on how high the water may rise. I've seen people use above ground swimming pools as a water proofing method in the past without issues. making sure you have pool 5ft deep.

Shower Cubicles are also waterproof, and take up less room.

nevermind, aholes, I found this -

It will be just fine, I'll just put some weather stripping on it before I store it and put it on a shelf.

Apply a bead of removable weather seal around the gap of that to make it more water resistant. It comes in the same tubes you buy silicone in that fit in a caulking gun.

It is under five bucks. DAP Seal-n-peel, is a brand I'd suggest.

I sincerely appreciate being on the "IN" list :D

Have used those gray boxes...should be pretty good with weatherstripping. Also bag the items inside....for smaller items, gov't ammo boxes are the SHIT. Atmosphere / water proof to the nth degree. For instance, camping in the high desert (4,000 ft elev) and we go between home / there (home is 200 ft), the box will literally blow / suck when opened due to the air density difference. The standard size is like the 50 cal or 5.56 nato box (6x12x8 or so) but I have some large missle boxes too (8x12x36)...get them at military surplus joint pretty cheap....wonderful shit.....come in all sizes.

Oh...and a s a bonus, they can be used as a flotation device in case of a water landing :D

I use boxes like that to keep top secret items in my basement in Paris. The lids have a rubber lip and have like 6 pressure points to seal the lid to the box. They have their own wheels one one side and a handle on the other side. They problably cost around 40€ each and have 100L capacity.

you could also use dry bags, don't even worry about stripping.

The solution you found is made by Rubbermaid which you expressly forbid in your original post.

I think you should go with storage unit on a hill. Seems like the most feasible none Rubbermaid idea.

I get the bath tub, but the candle wax? If this was in an episode i totally forgot.

By the way, in france a few years ago some nerds did the bathtub thing to a girl after drug stuff went wrong. It was due to that breaking bad episode.
