And if you are some sort of office lady that can't do it. (Saxitoxin) Buy a few cans of gas or better yet BBQ starting fluid since it won't start your entire neighborhood on fire as easily. Buy a couple of cords of wood and keep it dry. Build/buy or have a proper fire pit built for you, about ten or more feet away from any sheds or buildings. Preferably with gravel or concrete around it. With a grill and tripod if you want to get fancy. Google image search will fetch you some pictures.

Conversely you could get a old BBQ or even a disposable habachi, even an old metal bucket or coffee can in a pinch. They even sell self lighting charcoal brickets, they have accelerant in them, keep the bag dry and don't open it until you need to light it.

Buy a giant bag of rice and keep it dry too, all steel or cast iron pot with loose fitting lid, two cups of water plus one cup of rice. Boil until it steams soft enough to eat. A bottle of soy sauce if you want for flavour.

Depends on the rice and cookware used. 2:1 for brown rice works. For jasmine rice in my kitchen it just makes rice mush. For jasmine i do like 1.25:1 water to rice.

What brand? I have never found rice that did not work with the two to one but I typically stick with one brand. I have probably only tried five or six total.

This is my usual. http://forums.redflagdeals.com/supersto ... a-1397667/
I throw that in the rice cooker with twice as much water and it comes out like rice.

I wonder if your rice is starting different because of your areas humidity.

The pot will definately destroy it if the steam can't escape, that was why I suggested a loose fitting lid. Vented would be even better. Those rice cookers are great. You don't even have to stay in the same room. Just throw in the rice and water, come back later, and it's done.

Need electricity though, not the best for the prepper thing.

I had one given to me years ago when i moved out from home. When i used 2:1 it always came out mushy. Now i just use a sauce pan with a loose lid.

I usually get the bulk rice from Winco, it's cheaper. But all brands I've ever tried turned out similar. I imagine it could be due to pressure where I'm at, plus heat flow and stuff.

Ok, so you should do some test runs with whatever pot you get at the location of your fire pit/BBQ/coffee can or where ever you plan to put wood and drench it with lighter fluid.

Find out if you need 2cups of water for one cup of rice or if you need to tweek the ratio. It's better to find out before you don't have the luxury of throwing out mushy rice.
