MLK24HR Premium Giveaway! Darnell Forum Fun!!

Ever remaining sanguine in the throws of our nation's most abhorrent bouts for true racial equality, Martin Luther King Jr. possessed an inherent ability to aspire hope in others. Much like fellow site member and self proclaimed mycologist patches70, who has just earned himself a free ride on this crazy carousal we call Conquer Club.

In loving memory of his shining light please share a CC memory or a dream you have had where harmony and hope were wrought in the power of word. In return(If I feel your post helps to right our path towards a brighter and better us) I will personally buy you one years premium membership.

i think one of my proudest members of the BpB, was when a few of us were asking mods/admins about plans for Black History Month and we were patently ignored... so, instead of bitching about it, we pulled out a quick black history month sig, created a contest and gave away Premium for a year.

Instead of allowing the admins, at that time, to make Black History Month something not even mentioned by the site. The BpB ran a very successful and informative contest to raise awareness to the holiday and possibly to prominent black americans that many US members and International members were not aware of. One of my favorite things we did, was allow anyone to fly our sig for the contest. the forum was full of our black history signature and i think the admins had to take notice.

additionally, BpB taught clans how to run a proper contest (something the site still needs to learn).. like King H, we gave away a full year of premium, something Team CC seems always hard pressed to do... black history month... it is important... thanks KH...-Jn

In honour of black history month, the Bullet-Proof Bandits are flying the above special signature recognizing many past and present prominent members of the Black Community. In conjunction with this special month long clan signature, we are running a contest open to any member of Conquer Club to win a FREE Premium Membership. The contest is simple and direct. Name as many of the prominent people within our sig as you can, and submit your efforts. The person/persons with the most correct names within their submission will then be entered into a random drawing, if necessary, to decide who wins the Premium Membership. So, be careful who you share your research with, because you may be the only person that has figured out one, if not all of the tougher faces!!

Time to dust off your encyclopedia, wikipedia, dictionary and search engines, and figure out who the faces are within our clan sig and submit your entry as soon as you can. Also, feel free to fly the BpB sig on your profile as a show of respect for this important month, and to spread the word that it is Black History Month!!

What is black history month?
Black History Month is a remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated annually in the United States and Canada in the month of February, while in the UK it is held in the month of October.

The remembrance was originated in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson as "Negro History Week". Woodson chose the second week of February because it marked the birthdays of two Americans who greatly influenced the lives and social condition of African Americans: former President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist Frederick Douglass.

Contest:Name the most prominent people within our special Black History Month Signature, and the person/persons with the most correct names within their submission will then be entered into a random drawing, if necessary, to decide who wins the Premium Membership.

Submissions:Please submit your entry using the below list of BpB members. Simply fill in the name of the prominent person each BpB member has selected for their slot in the sig, next to the appropriate members name. Then submit the below completed list to either owenshooter or jbrettlip, and wait for the results at the end of the month. Remember, it is not necessary to name ALL of the prominent persons within our sig, but the more names you submit, the better your chances are for winning:

I think my story is appropriate to the thread:

https://www.nationalservice.gov/mlkday

MONDAY, JANUARY 16, 2017 (from the link above)
"Thanks to everyone who served on MLK Day! Americans across the country served in food banks, in schools, in hospitals and outdoors. If you didn't get a chance to serve on MLK Day this year, that's okay! We post service opportunities year round. So when you're ready, come back here and we will help you find a service oppo[r]tunity near you."

My story:
My church in my town does a feeding program for needy and poor every Monday evening. I showed up to help last night, on Martin L. King's birthday, an appropriate day. This was helpful to me since I had the day off. We are one of 8 Churches in my town who do this. We have been doing this for about 6-9 months; I am not sure how long because this has been an evolving effort, started before the every Monday event. The feeding program has one church (in my town) offer a free hot meal every night of the week. (Two churches share Sundays.)

Anyway, there were about 26 people there to be fed, including at least 2 children, about 10-12 years old. Most were older men, but there was a mixed crowd....all races (but I did not see Orientals or Hispanics)...so whites and blacks and mixed heritages. When I got home, my wife asked were they homeless?...and I said, [SORRY about this one....]....no one smelled like B. O. and in need of a bath. I told her that these are mostly needy and poor and not homeless, based on THAT fact. I served potatoes, carrots, and/or green beans. We have a large Filipino group at our Church and one of the Filipino women fixed those items. I also served dessert (homemade cup cakes, plus a piece of brownie) and went along the tables to serve that, SO I WOULD have known if they were likely homeless.

I think there is a tremendous NEED in any community. People are not starving (not in America, for the VAST majority, I THINK) BUT there are hungry persons. My town's schools have about 67-75% Free and Reduced Federal Lunch Program eligible. And people are not always homeless. There are LOTS of working poor and those who do not (or cannot) work (some are disabled). This is a topic we often discuss with my son-in-law, a police officer in a nearby community.

Besides the 26 individuals there, we fixed at least 10 meals for others who were unable to attend, and someone there was going to take the food to them. NO questions asked, but we wanted to wait until we knew no one else would show up at the last minute to get food. (We go 6-7 pm.) I then stayed to clean up and left for home about 7:30. BTW: since I am a numbers guy, I counted the people being fed; the lady in charge asked if I got a count....my first time ever there...I had the # for her. I was surprised my friend the engineer, who served the chicken, did NOT count. He told me that 30 is about the usual number fed weekly. The lady in charge told me we average 40, but she counts the take home meals, that he did not.

I asked the lady in charge: funding is by donations from Church members. We (family & Church) also participate in a Food Pantry for needy folks to obtained canned goods to take home, ALONG with several other local Churches. My wife and I decided peanut butter was a good donation for that cause. (The cook for the chicken dinner is a retired Filipino doctor; I suspect that he purchased all the chicken, 2 pieces per person and enough for some 34 persons.)

I plan to go back, but can only spare about 1 (maybe 2) evenings each month.

It's a worthwhile thing to do, I do something similar every couple of weeks, as well as helping out with their foodbank and job club services (mostly it's setting people up with e-mail accounts and helping to write CVs and job applications). It's something that's easy to take on, but can be tiring once you realise the scale of the problem, and that it's not just as simple as getting food to people.

So respect to you for going back- it's really rewarding work, but it can be tough.

No mate, but I do get some surprising abuse from time to time. That's one of the reasons why I say it's tough and I respect the guy for going back. People come in with a whole mix of problems. If you go in to it only expecting heartfelt gratitude, you're doing it for the wrong reasons.

In my area, people who are homeless often have a mix of problems- food and shelter are immediate issues. Mental illness, physical disabilities and illnesses, debt, drug and alcohol problems, legal issues, work and training problems, family issues...

It requires a kind of mental toughness that's actually pretty inspiring when I see it in the people I work with.

So, no mate, you calling me a troll, over and over is pretty tame.

I doubt anyone really thought you were anything other than a troll, llama, but sometimes it's nice to have something to refer people to when they're wondering about posters.

Have you ever considered volunteering? It'd be a bit of a change from slagging off people who do things without obvious reward, but you might learn something. I mean that genuinely.
