Growing up in the 60's, I always viewed John Glenn as real HERO, one who made us look up and look beyond ourselves. I have a story of seeing him, face to face, at least from a distance:
I live in Virginia, and one advantage is that we are NEAR Washington, D.C. to visit. Many years ago my family and I visited the U.S. Capitol, where the Senate and House convene. We saw the Rotunda, and afterwards we wandered around. There was NO signs, guards, or even a physical barrier to prevent us from going to the Senate side. Walking down a corridor, I saw a lone figure walk out and then into a closed door. He looked at us, as if asking, "Who are those people and what are they doing HERE?" It was John Glenn. He did not say a word, but went about his travels down the closed hallway. We did not say a word.
I am sure I could not repeat my wanderings TODAY, after 911 and after many other security issues & threats in the past 30 years. I think this occurred around 1985 or so. Later we discussed the thrill of seeing a Senator, but were honored that the lone figure we saw was John Glenn, who was Senator from Ohio at the time.
