16 is the maximum size any league should be. Just do the math: there are 32 teams in the NFL. Most leagues require: 1qb, 2rb, 3wr/te, 1k, 1def. Dont forget about bye weeks, you are going to need alternates and you are going to want a starter as your alternate. So if you have 16 teams you are pretty much maxed out as far as every team getting a starter: 2qb's/16 teams=32. RB's are a little different. These days almost every team in the league is running some kind of RBBC (running back by committe) so finding a reliable starter in even a 12 team league is tough. WR is another thing entirely. They are very hit or miss. Generally you want at least 1 top 10 reciever on your team (Holt, Harrison, Chad Johnson, etc) with 16 teams that wr3 spot is in constant fluctuation unless you get very lucky or have very good inside info ( http://www.thehuddle.com). Kickers and team defenses are the same as qb's 2 of each per team x 16 teams= 32 starters. So the generally accepted max under normal league rules is 16 teams.

Colossus wrote:I like the idea of a bye week for the top two seeds, personally. Otherwise, the regular season doesn't mean as much. So, if there are six teams and the top two get a first round bye, the playoffs would be the last three weeks. I think this sort of setup or a three week, 8 team playoffs is good. 4 teams is too few for a 16 team league, I think.

good way to explain it. now for playoffs...4, 6, or 8?

Another truism to FF is NO SUPERBOWL ON WEEK 16. Very important. Any team that has tied up up a spot in the playoffs will generally sit thier best players on week 16. You dont want L.T. sitting on th ebench during you fantasy superbowl. Or start Peyton only to have him play 2 quarters of football. My local big money league starts thier playoffs on week 13. 6 playoff teams. Week 13 is wildcard week. If you are breaking it up in divisions, week 13 is a bye for the top two teams in thier divisions (seed 3vs6 and 4vs5). Week 14 is divisional finals (lets say th etop seeds won, 1vs4 2vs3. Week 15 is your SB (1vs2). You have to also decide if you want total points to be a factor in getting to the playoffs. We give the WC's to the top scoring teams not to make the playoffs. I dont know how flexible yahoo leagues are (not very, im sure) but thats something else to think about.
P.S. I am not factoring byes into the word "week". There are literally 18 "weeks" in a football season. I am talking game weeks.
