The Second Debate- Trump vs Clinton

Postby Symmetry on Mon Oct 10, 2016 8:26 pm

A lot has happened since the first debate. Trump is having trouble keeping the support if Republicans after his offensive comments, but he chose to go on the attack.

How do you think they did? Was it a fighting performance for Trump? A rope-a-dope for Clinton? Or a disappointment all round?

5 minutes in, I switched to DBZ Kai. Goku finally began his fight with Cell.

It was a fun debate. A lot more exciting than the first one.

I suppose, from society's point of view, it would be better if they actually debated issues of substance, but in the Demlican-Repocrat duopoly one shan't expect too much.

Having an entertaining match of verbal pugilism is the best we can expect, given the generally debauched state of democracy today. Both laid some good beats on their opponent, but Trump is just a little better at this type of thing than Clinton is.

Trump's best shot was a major crowd pleaser:
CLINTON: … (...)
because, you know, it is — it’s just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country.

TRUMP: Because you’d be in jail.

(APPLAUSE)

RADDATZ: Secretary Clinton…

COOPER: We want to remind the audience to please not talk out loud. Please do not applaud. You’re just wasting time.

It was the only time that applause was loud enough that Cooper felt it necessary to say that.

Clinton's hits were more subdued, but still significant:
TRUMP:(...)

You take a look at what’s happening to steel and the cost of steel and China dumping vast amounts of steel all over the United States, which essentially is killing our steelworkers and our steel companies. We have to guard our energy companies. We have to make it possible.

(...)

COOPER: Your time is up. Thank you.

TRUMP: It’s an absolute disgrace. COOPER: Secretary Clinton, two minutes.

CLINTON: And actually — well, that was very interesting. First of all, China is illegally dumping steel in the United States and Donald Trump is buying it to build his buildings, putting steelworkers and American steel plants out of business. (...)

That was a direct hit on Trump's hypocrisy, him masquerading as the friend of the working man and Clinton demonstrating very concisely that Donald is in business for Donald and f*ck everybody else.

If she had more direct hits like that, it would have been very much her show, but they were relatively few.

Trump in a split decision.

I'm fascinated by it. Watch it, and Trump edges it. Watch the fallout, and marginal supporters fall away from him, and his party political support is flaking away too. He kinda preached to his converted. Clinton sort of knows that letting him speak is a very safe strategy.

He got some good hits in, but you've got to wonder if he's not channelling Pyrrhus- " Another victory like that and we're done for"
