I'm talking about adult amateur sport. Perhaps it's never occurred to you to put down the beer and throw a baseball with some friends, but I think amateur sport is much better than just trolling the web.

Having a kid has nothing to do with it. It's still the highest level of athleticism in any sport. Yes, there are already world cups of skiing, canoeing, etc. The athletes themselves love the excitement of the games, living in the Olympic village, having the marketing behind them, being able to set a new world record with every sports channel in the world reporting on it.

The Olympic ceremony is the only chance most Americans will have to see a flag that isn't ISIS or the Stars and Stripes.

The games are too expensive, but the answer is to make them cheaper. 500 million dollar Jetsons arenas in the middle of nowhere are the reason for the cost. The Winter Games used to always be in areas which already had ski resorts, then random cities started bidding. The bobsled run in Sarejevo has a machine gun post at the top. The IOC has already announced their new policy is to consider cities that already have sports complexes.

The only reason I can see stopping the Olympics is as part of a more general global collapse. I would willingly trade the Olympics for a halt to fiat money and the consequent economic crash (it really wouldn't be a crash, just a deflation so that the money you own becomes more valuable).

Brazil is part of the developing world, and the Olympic movement has done absolutely the right thing by coming here. Indeed, the Games should get out more often.
