We can't have the military upsurt an elected government.
Lets put this in a way that is understandable to you.
Lets say that Obama begins trying to rewrite the constitution himself without the States input. He wants to eliminate the two term limit. The judges of course block this attempt. Obama responds having journalists tossed in prison and assassinated on the streets who don't work to convince the frothy leftist radicals to put pressure on local governments to support Obama's plans.
Obama starts purging the military replacing officers with leftist and communist ideological individuals. Obama sends in troops into Canada and Mexico to take control of some of oil fields and oil shale facilities. The profits from this stolen oil Obama puts into his own offshore accounts and the accounts of his friends and family.
Obama starts attempting to remove the authority of the courts through executive order, nationalizes the police forces into federal agents under his control.
Some military officers who might or might not have Tea Party affiliations attempt a coup which is crushed. After this attempted coup (justified for obvious reasons) is crushed, Obama arrests the Supreme Court who blocked his attempted rewriting of the Constitution, fires thousands of judges who ruled against any of his legislative attempts, arrests prosecutors who filed suit against his executive orders, arrests the governors of States who were critical of his policies, shuts down newspapers and media that were critical of his policies or refused to engage in his propaganda attempts.
Obama claims all those who were arrested and executed were all Tea Party members and says this is all justified to "preserve democracy". He then goes ahead and rewrites the Constitution that enables him to become a life long leader of the US with the right to name his successor.
That's what Erdogan has done and is doing.
