Youtube has a live feed going about it, but not really fluent in the local language.

The Islamic factions of Turks seem to be willing to confront the Turkish army blindly following Erdogan's plea to resist the coup. The Turkish army is going to crush them if they have to. It just might get a bit violent.

Erdogan claims that the coup is being run from Pennsylvania  . He is referring to Fethullah Gülen who currently resides in Pennsylvania.

The Army looks like they are firing warning shots there Saxi. The Army might be fighting the police though, a couple of explosions observed at police headquarters in the capital but no one knows exactly yet.

Confirmed according to Anadolu Agency, Army fighting the police. 17 police officers confirmed killed in helicopter attack at police special forces headquarters in Ankara. An F-16 has been shot down as well. The violence is ramping up. AP reports that protesters trying to cross a bridge have been shot/injured by Army forces.

If the coup fails, how awkward is it going to be for Germany and the UK tomorrow after they refused Erdogan asylum?

There's no way this doesn't end-up like a shit-show for the west. Linda Searcy couldn't have planned this one better. =D>

Looks like the coup might be over. The soldiers holding the state run news station have been arrested.

I'm rooting for the coup too, but at this point it's not looking good.

We shall see.

Looks like it was a really badly planned coup attempt. Erdogen is back. Some are saying that Erdogen himself might have been responsible for the coup. Now he knows what Germany and the UK really think of him if the reports are true they denied asylum. He is one shady mf'er so who knows. Purges will commence immediately.

No biggie.

Pinochet crushed a coup attempt against Salvador Allende just a few weeks before he launched his own.

Erdogan is on notice. Next time won't be as gentle.

Purges will begin?

Erdogan and what's his face have been purging the army since 2003.

I'm not surprised they accused the Gulen of being the source of it. That was my first thought but I couldn't remember the name. Google is totally non-helpful as searching "non-political Turkey factions" doesn't give anything except Turkish group porn. The Gulen movement is pretty radically different from anything we have in the West*, so we don't even have the words to really describe it and Google doesn't know what I am talking about.

Here is how Gulen movement Canada describes itself:
The Gulen Movement is concerned with cultural values and beliefs. In its service projects it incorporates innovations in its established repertoires of action, introduces an element of novelty in its interactions, and establishes a new recombination of identities, methods of serving people, and demands. All these can in turn inspire other movements. The Gulen Movement’s concern with cultural and moral values is clearly demonstrated in its intercultural or educational activities and in its transnational altruistic services. It is also clearly seen in its understanding of civil society and pluralist participatory democracy and their compatibilities with Islam.

*It's not an NGO, a political party, a University fraternity or a religious sect, although it has the attributes of all 4.

Dude, this morning Erdogan has dismissed 2,700+ judges, arrested 147 appeals court members and 48 administrative court members and prosecutors in addition to arresting hundreds of soldiers. It's more than just purging the army, Erdogan is purging the judicial branch of anyone who he thinks has a remote chance of opposing his consolidation of power. A consolidation that Erdogan announced is justified because of the coup attempt.

Erdogen has effectively eliminated all domestic opposition to his regime. The courts have been hindering Erdogen for too long now he's got the excuse to get rid of those who opposed him even though the judges and judiciary branch likely didn't have anything to do with any coup.

That's great. "the Putin of NATO" won't have the power he needs until the opposition is destroyed.

f*ck you. In my old commune, soap was almost a religious artifact. Often a precursor to the best orgies.
