Last SS Auschwitz guard sentenced

Reinhold Hanning was sentenced to prison for his role in the Holocaust. As a guard at Auschwitz, he was fully aware of the gas chambers. At 94, he may well be the last of his confederates to be tried.

The trial included testimony from around a dozen Holocaust survivors, many of them extremely elderly, who detailed their horrific experiences, recalling piles of bodies and the smell of burnt flesh in the death camp.
"It is a just verdict, but he should say more, tell the truth for the young people," said Leon Schwarzbaum, a 95-year-old Auschwitz survivor from Berlin.

Meh- happens to me all the time. What did you think of the article?

There's a line of thinking that says that the SS is a thing best forgotten, or dismissed as a relic.

There's also the other side- that it shouldn't be forgotten.

I only vaguely knew about them growing up. The most I ever heard about them, was that movie they had made. And only that because of the daycare I was in at the time (yes, little MTG was at a daycare in the 90s).
