Court Finds Worship of Flying Spaghetti Monster Is Not a Real Religion

Image

A federal judge ruled Thursday that “Pastafarianism” isn’t a real religion worthy of accommodations after a practicing inmate put in a bid for the "ability to order and wear religious clothing and pendants, the right to meet for weekly worship services and classes and the right to receive communion.”

So, there you have it. Not all religions are equally silly under the law.

“This is not a question of theology: it is a matter of basic reading comprehension. The FSM Gospel is plainly a work of satire, meant to entertain while making a pointed political statement. To read it as religious doctrine would be little different from grounding a "religious exercise" on any other work of fiction.”

“Of course, there are those who contend—and Cavanaugh is probably among them—that the Bible or the Koran are just as fictional as those books. It is not always an easy line to draw. But there must be a line beyond which a practice is not ‘religious’ simply because a plaintiff labels it as such.”

“The Court concludes that ‘FSMism’ is on the far side of that line.”

Therefore Atheists are now prohibited from using the FSM in their general arguments against religion. Q.E.D.

But this does not apply to Wisconsin or Russia as your quoted article continues -

Last year one Michael Schumacher claimed the ability to wear a colander in his Wisc. driver’s license photo, though the state didn’t put up much of a fight. They just told him to make sure his face was visible.

It’s a trend that also spans across international waters as it seems more and more people are vying for the funniest picture to show off to all their friends. But it didn't go quite as planned for one Russian man, who is now required by law to wear a colander at all times while driving his vehicle at the risk of losing his license.

The constitution does not say freedom of religion as a judge sees it, not saying that I don't think its out there as well, but that ruling was clearly unconstitutional. And that's the shame of it, the judge allowed his own religious bias sway his decision and that's exactly how its NOT supposed to work

I propose that those and only those religions for which their cheif diety is prepared to appear in the court and testify to his/her/it's reality should be deemed real religions.

So if Pastafarianism were to attract the clout of some prominent celebrities and utilize the power of aggressive attorneys, it would be deemed a genuine religion?

Not sure who your response was aimed at TG , but if one crackpot religion does get a pass all should get one, and you could go all the way back to RLDS. And the Mormons to the free passes , so by the constitution of America they get to practice as they see fit. Or as the bias of judges see fit.

Ty Tzor hadn't heard about this, seems that celebrity status may be having less effect than it has had in previous years, and in my opinion that's a good start

As a non-practicing atheist, I have to agree with the judge.

The Spaghetti Monster is a political statement, not a religion. People pretending to practice it do not truly believe there is such thing as a Flying Spaghetti Monster. People practicing real religions truly believe in the tenets of their faith. Theoretically anyway... You can't read people's minds.

The actual believe in the tenets of the faith is what sets a real religion apart from a political concept.

Atheists could form real religions based on a belief in science, and could setup science-chats the same way religions have bible-studies. If they did this then the judge would go along with the accommodations.

I actually should call myself agnostic.

I don't know if any God or gods exist. I don't know if there is any unknown "power" that connects us.

I will say I don't think anyone is capable of proving their philosophy/ religion is "the right one". Most major religions are incompatible with each other..... they can't all be "true".

Furthermore, if there is an all-powerful omniscient deity, I just don't think he/she/it would care much about our day-to-day life.

Understood, but I believe all major religion's have a key element in common, everything else is human bias, ignorance, and just plain stupidity, that keeps the strife going and perpetuated and until humans realize their error, it will continue. Few things I agree with but this one I do, NO MAN KNOWS THE MIND OF GOD, and any who pretend to or think to interpret any of the creator's work, steer clear.only ill can come from it. Proof look at history up to today, every war is and was steeped in the name of god, blasphemy at its worse, my opinion only, got no proof either way, John Lennon said it best and yes he wasn't the only one.what he didn't say was his belief in God was ABSOLUTE and unwavering.and that each person had to come to terms with it on their own
