FYI, you're picking a quote from a period when the British empire was desperately seeking reconciliation with Russia due to Russian presence in Manchuria and Central-asia. And a period when the Russian pan-slavism constantly put it at odds with the Ottoman Empire and the Austrian-Hungarian empire(supported by Prussia). The balkans back then were the biggest threat to european peace, as proven by WWI two decades later. I hardly think that's still the case. Ever since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia has been pushed by NATO in a defensive position. Right now the guarantor for peace seems to be the pacifists among NATO-members, most notably Germany.

I respect Mr. Putin but that's a bridge too far. Scandinavia, the Baltic states, and pretty much every other country in Europe aside from some people in the old Eastern block countries agree with me.

I don't really care if Trump becomes president. He seems capable of changing his tone and approach when the situation requires it, and so when all is said and done I doubt he'd be the unhinged nutjob president that people fear he would be. I also doubt his foreign policy would vary significantly at all from the foreign policy of Bush, Obama or any of his current challengers for the 2016 race, so from a foreigner's point of view it really matters very little to me.

I mean, Obama's the president of hope and change who won a Nobel Peace Prize, and under his leadership America has expanded its conduction of drone assassinations significantly and made deliberate moves to contest and contain China's influence in Asia. It has also played active roles in creating and/or stoking conflicts in Libya, Ukraine and Syria. Do any of you really expect that there is any potential candidate out there who would become president and suddenly America's foreign aggression would change course?

Obama's deliberate provocation of China and Russia on their borders, his extraterritorial assassinations and his consistent attempts to destabilize the Middle East are far more important than his decision to stop punishing a tiny Caribbean island for the Cold War.
