On the brink of new World War

Postby GoranZ on Thu Feb 11, 2016 5:49 pm

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has warned of the possibility of a permanent or "world war" if a resolution of the Syrian conflict is not found and U.S. and Arab ground forces get involved in the conflict.

Medvedev, in an interview in Munich with Germany's Handelsblatt newspaper on February 11, said Washington and Moscow must use their influence to pressure all sides in the conflict to agree to a cease-fire.

He said if Saudi forces joined a recently discussed U.S.-led ground operation into Syria it could turn "the war into a permanent one," citing Afghanistan and "many other countries" as examples.

Medvedev said the United States and Arab countries must think carefully before getting more deeply involved in Syria and that "all sides must be compelled to sit at the negotiating table instead of unleashing a new world war."

Medvedev Warns Of 'World War' If Syrian Peace Talks Fail, U.S., Arab Troops Enter

Russians are not kidding, they gonna use nukes if necessary and Riyadh will be the demo.

More likely the arabs get involved and then Iran gets more involved and they raise tentions amongst themselves. The US would never risk a conflict with another superpower without the support of its allies and at the moment, due to the migration crisis, more europeans have become pro-Russian, or at least they've started to see Putin in a more positive light.

As for Russia, I highly doubt Putin is stupid enough to let things escalate to that. He just knows that in a game of bluff-poker he wins against Obama.

In western europe more and more people are getting frustrated with the western approach to Syria, and seem to like Putin's harsh approach to the matter. This doesn't exactly equal pro-russian, but it does sympathize with the russian method.

In eastern europe more and more people are waking up from the fact that the EU isn't a dreamland as they thought it was when they joined, and in their anger/frustration have started to turn their heads back east to papa bear. Initially it looked like it was just Viktor Orban in Hungary, but nowadays it seems to be a starting trend. The migration crisis is one of the major contributing factors to all this.

So it's not that the refugee crisis really has a direct connection with Putin but the growing dissent is turning in his favour.

I think Russian politics has been stuck on the idea of a new world war for a few decades now. Pissing off every country around you to garner cheap nationalism is a tactic that increasingly seems to backfire.

Putin has dug himself a position where he's tolerated as long as he can appear to be useful.

Israel will lose its biggest(and probably only) supporter ;) No more excursions to Gaza, Lebanon, Golan etc...

Why does Saudi Foreign Minister thinks that Saudi Arabia is some kind of big player in world politics?
The interview is hilarious... They will fight Daesh but their goal will be to topple Assad

After ISIS is dead and buried, Assad is next.

Are you saying Russia is going to shoot down Saudi Arabia's planes....I seriously doubt that. Putin might be a closet homosexual, but he ain't stupid.

Nice joke  People like you were saying the same for Castro, but he outlive them ALL :D

Bernie Sanders wrote:Are you saying Russia is going to shoot down Saudi Arabia's planes....I seriously doubt that.

Atm US would not dare directly confront with Russia for the same reasons Russia would not directly confront US, but Saudi Arabia is piece of cake, Russian can erase them from the face of the earth if they want

If Putin f*ck you every day in political arena it doesn't mean he is homosexual
And I agree, he ain't stupid, but the same can not be said for you ;)

As Lavrov said earlier today... The situation in Syria can now evolve into one of three variants: negotiated compromise, Assad’s military victory, and a large war with the participation of all the outside actors.
Turks are preparing for the third option... US urges Turkey to stop shelling Kurdish and Syrian forces. But US and especially EU would not even consider such outcome.

I'm guessing that it will be roughly what happened last time that the US and Russia were preoccupied with each other. Pretty much nothing.

What interests do you think Russia needs to protect? I notice you were got a tad desperate and couldn't name any.

I'm no friend of the Russians, but they're not entirely wrong. I think it's pretty scary how fast American propaganda changed gears. Six months ago all you'd see on the news is "We need to stop ISIS at all costs!" Now that the Russians are kicking the shit out of ISIS, the lead story on every newscast is "We have to get humanitarian aid to the suffering people of Aleppo before it's too late."

ISIS was a convenient bogeyman to scare people with, but a dead bogeyman isn't so scary. The war hawks need to keep ISIS alive to keep frightening people. That's not news, but what is news is the completely effortless way they've been able do a 180 without any meaningful outrage at home. The mainstream media gets more supine by the year. No way Edward R. Murrow would have let this pass, or even Walter Cronkite.

The American media may be privately owned, but they're no less tools of the state than the Russian media.
