This is one of those things where if you just look at it casually you might think it a bit silly, and those that are interested in it to be a bit overzealous.

I do a lot of work on women writing in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Mostly the work is in manuscript rather than print. Print survives better than manuscript, and manuscript survives better than oral work.

We tend to think that the stuff that survives is best, but often it's just what has been privileged.

There's also a view of history that it should be a set of facts about key people and important events- kings, presidents, wars and revolutions. Then there's a more social view of history that looks at the little people, if you like.

Whites don't get any months. But that is a problem with our education system in general.

I firmly believe that the quality of education in history is horrible. On the other hand, I'm not sure you really want the real history of slaves and former slaves taught, and certainly not for an entire month. This would destroy the narrative that the party of slavery, the party of secession, the party of segregation has managed to impose upon the community of descendants of African slaves.

Let's consider the first elected black members of congress ...

Joseph Rainey (1832–1887) South Carolina's 1st December 12, 1870 March 3, 1879 Republican
Jefferson F. Long (1836–1901) Georgia's 4th January 16, 1871 March 3, 1871 Republican
Robert C. De Large (1842–1874) South Carolina's 2nd March 4, 1871 January 24, 1873 Republican
Robert B. Elliott (1842–1884) South Carolina's 3rd March 4, 1871 November 1, 1874 Republican
Benjamin S. Turner (1825–1894) Alabama's 1st March 4, 1871 March 3, 1873 Republican

It's not odd that they are all Republicans. The first black congressman from the Democratic party doesn't happen until 1935!

As for senators, the list is much smaller (due to there being less people in the senate)

Hiram Rhodes Revels (1827–1901) Mississippi February 23, 1870 March 3, 1871 Republican

The first senator from the Democratic party doesn't happen until 1993!

Somehow I have the feeling that this little bit of "history" isn't taught in "Black History Month." Having the Democrats in charge of Black History Month is like having the foxes in charge of educating the chickens.

I hear this argument all the time from today's racist Republicans.

Dixiecrats who were Democrats from the southern states and fought against any type of civil rights for BLACKS [but were called other names by these Dixiecrats] flipped to the Republican Party in the 60s and 70s. Whereas the Northern Republicans became Democrats.

Your history lesson to us is laughable.
