Well, now that I look at what I said I see what you mean. Beyond the no trespassing markings that we know are there, he said there are at least a hundred miles of a straight ice sheet, which was what I meant by the resources being there. He kept flying though, because that was his assigned mission. After those 100 miles or so, is when he says he came to the ice wall. So after the "out of bounds" signs, and before the wall, are where the supposed resources are.

But wouldn't a government be afraid of the radiation/nuclear waste falling back on top of us? Especially with as many nuclear bombs both countries who were competing to get to space at the time sent off? Wouldn't that harm our ozone layer pretty badly? We've see what it's done on land.

Again he was flying, how did he see coal or detect uranium,this was basically pointing out, be real hard to see coal from the air and even tougher to detect uranium without a Geiger counter and even harder to get readings from in the air unless it was a real damn big source, which would in turn beg the question wyd was he doing on a routine mission with a damn Geiger counter, your info source seems to be off in some areas WAY OFF

It looks like Richard E. Byrd was duked by one of nature's practical jokes, a Fata Morgana. This common mirage occurs in cold flat areas (the arctic and Antarctica). Poor guy.... making a mountain out of refracted light, embarrassing.

Not at the time. Contamination wasn't generally understood to the point where it is today. (Long term absorption of long term radioactive heavy metals.) Radiation was generally understood and the effects of radiation decrease drastically with distance.

Part of the "Space Race" was to keep the other side from doing nuclear testing in space (possibly on the far side of the moon where it would be harder to detect).

I'm not saying that this wasn't a good thing to do. I'm saying that at the time few people knew the full implications of the actions. Nobody was thinking about the Ozone layer in the 50's.

I was just a wee lad in those days! My how 10 years has flown by so fast. It's hard to believe I was a 12 year old when I started haha.

Anyways guys, honestly I just love conspiracy theories and the discussions they bring about. It's intriguing to me to hear what people have to say regarding these issues, whether they be sarcastic or not. It's all in the name of interest for me.
