The US 7th Fleet Commander Robert Thomas recently stated that the United States would welcome a Japanese extension of air patrols into the South China Sea. The Pentagon subsequently expressed support for this statement and said this would help to maintain stability in the South China Sea.

We all know the South China Sea is not peaceful. In recent decades, several countries surrounding the region have been eroding Chinese territory and violating China's economic rights and interests in the region.

Meanwhile, the United States pushes its 'rebalancing'strategy in the Asia-Pacific region and expands its military presence in the region . For some time, the Unites States has not only conducted close surveillance over China, but also expanded its alliances and partnerships in the region.

The Unites States is an obvious agitator in the South China Sea disputes, which would be resolved through direct negotiation without US interference.

Senior US military officials and officials of the Department of Defense are now encouraging Japan to get involved in South China Sea affairs. Their objectives are as follows:

First, by expanding the internationalization of the South China Sea, to exert more international pressure on China; second, through a joint show of force by the United States and Japan, to upgrade the deterrent to China; third, sending a signal to the other parties involved that they have no need to rely on diplomatic means to seek mutual benefits; they can depend on the interference of the United States.

The United States has nothing more to offer than continued dominance in East Asia. It appears to take the view that neither China nor any of the other countries which are actually located in this region are entitled to develop rules that apply there. China only seeks to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests of national sovereignty, and does not seek any special entitlements. The South China Sea has historically belonged to China, and its neighboring countries have accepted that as a fact in the past.

The United States has repeatedly encouraged Japan to patrol in the region, an indication that it hopes to take advantage of the Sino-Japanese conflict to hinder independent consultations between China and the ASEAN countries.

In the name of regional stability, the United States is sowing discord in the South China Sea. It will not succeed in its attempts to dominate the region, and the East Asian countries should realize that achieving regional development and security depend on cooperation.

Nice try!.. and interesting that you, who try to count yourself objective, so thoroughly spout the current Chinese regime's rhetoric. The truth is that this area is in dispute and China is slowly, but surely moving to take over more and more territory.

China is moving to consolidate its control over territory it has long claimed to be its own. There is a difference

China signed and ratified into law that certain areas were international waters. Now it's saying that they were lying when they agreed that. Tough call, but either way China's trustworthiness is in doubt.

My guess, China will aim to distract from its actions by either playing the victim or the increasingly tired tactic of trying to shift attention to the US. The Communist old guard cold war tactics are always a lazy fallback.

Not really, no. Just because they have made a claim doesn't make it true, nor does their willingness to bully into it now mean everyone else should just go along.

Non sequitur. The point is that China is not expanding, it is consolidating its hold on its own territory. Just because parties like the Philippines have decided to claim a chunk of that territory doesn't make their claims automatically worthy of merit.

So you are saying the international community is claiming China's property? A big chunk of China's "claims" are international waters, UNCLAIMABLE.

Try reversing that.

China has claimed, others have claimed. International law has said it is open water, NOT Chinese territory, in part because there is no easy resolution and in part because the channels are significant to many nations, not just China. China just wants to act the bully and grab it because it is big enough to get away with it.

You are the first to criticize the US, even in past actions, but when it comes to China-- its whatever the government says.

You seem to have missed the point. The dispute in the South China Sea centers around sovereignty over various islands and reefs.

in part because there is no easy resolution and in part because the channels are significant to many nations, not just China.

Given that it is of critical importance to China that the maritime shipping lanes in the South China Sea stay open, I find it laughable that people are still peddling the idea that China wants to assert sovereignty over the South China Sea out of some desire to interfere with regional trade routes.

You are the first to criticize the US, even in past actions, but when it comes to China-- its whatever the government says.

I make almost no comment about America except in the context of American interference in East and South East Asia.

China's claim is outrageous, in terms of the volume of area they are seeking. I can only assume this is a negotiating ploy. as in, ask for an outrageous amount, and wind up with the reasonable amount you were actually after. assuming the Chinese govt. is reasonable and sane, that is.

You say outrageously big, I (quoting the immortal words of ex-Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi) say:

China can go ahead and make artificial islands anywhere they want. They are only building more distrust with their neighbors and this will bring them closer to America.

China is trying to buy back as many yuans as they can, to try to prop up their currency. It's all because, China is corrupt and even their corrupt business people are changing their currency to dollars. They send their children oversees for a better education and they'll end up staying in the west. The brain drain is happening and China will suffer as a result. Heck, the Chinese government has to excel in Corporate espionage to try to keep up in technology.

Numbers coming from a fixed source are meaningless. When the economic advisor doesn't even trust them you know something is up. Also you have a lot of empty growth in there.

Say what you want, China's government is worried.

China's economy is not growing as it should and the proof is in the sharp drop in oil and commodities prices. China has been fudging with it's numbers for years and the Chinese themselves are doing their best to dump yuans for dollars.
