Putin is spending cash reserves to keep the lid on Russian dissent. Once the reserves are spent, the real pain starts in 2017.

Goran, sorry for being out of action. Before I could reply I had to have a wisdom tooth removed. I think you're right to point out that the state control of media outlets is a problem, or perhaps a strength depending on your perspective.

1. Russia has one of the lowest Debt/GDP-ratio's in the world and has bast mineral deposits, making it a very credit worthy country.
2. Russia had been accumulating reserves for years before the sanctions and the government is backed by a whole assortment of billionaires, all of whose interests rise and fall with Putin.
3. Pussy Riot are anti-capitalist, Trotzky communist, anti-church. Considering their ideals most americans should be against such a movement as they represent what americans disapprove of most.
4. The EU would not allow the bankruptcy of the Russian state. It would be economically disastrous for an already unstable european economy. You think Lehman Brothers was bad? Guess what would happen if an economy the size of Russia would fail.

Oil prices and commodity prices are dropping.

Russia's cash reserves will be gone at the end of the year.

If the Russian State fails, new leadership will take over. It won't be disastrous to the World economy, as Russia will still have to export it's oil and commodities.

You'd love that wouldn't you? Delivering Russia once again into the hands of the second most popular party in Russia, the communist party.

It won't be the communist Party that will take over. It will be a coalition of parties that will take over.

There are only 4 parties in Russia, one of which being the pan-slavic far right, and ONLY ONE pro-western.

Once Putin goes Kaboom, other parties will rise to fill in the vacuum. The oligarchs and plutocrats don't want to lose power and will fund candidates to protect their self-interests. It's up to the masses to prevent this and yes, some Communists, Right Wingers, Socialists and Anarchists will be involved.

That's very optimistic dream, but I guess I can't expect anything else from a Bernie Sanders fan. Realistically I will only believe that once I see it.

I doubt Putin will "go kaboom" anytime soon. More likely is that he'll tighten control over the media so that opposition parties can't ever present a platform, and we'll see more threats, show trials, and unexplained deaths of opponents and critics.

Perhaps.

You got to think, sooner or later, the Russian people will sober up and demand change.

Putin approval rate is ~90% atm, something that hasn't been seen in US since its first president George Washington.
Other 9% favor communist leader, and in the remaining 1% favor ultra-nationalist or pro-western opposition.

The chance is bigger that the Russians will demand your head on the spike then to demand Putin to resign

P.S. Russians generally are well aware what are the reasons behind Russia's economy problems. Putin isn't one of those reasons. And they wont even consider another pro-western leader like Yeltsin ;)

Indeed, it's a deep sense of political naivety that drives much of the opposition to Putin in the West. They think that there's a some sort of credible opposition. Putin's regime controls the media, imprisons and assassinates opposition, and rules via kleptocracy.

Russians will vote for him- there is no one else.
