And let the hating begin.

sorry... prince is the GREATEST ever... hit to the 3:30 mark, he plays the f*ck out of My Guitar Gently Weeps... like it had never been played before... throw in his freaking stage presence and the guitar toss at the end, and he is just THE BEST EVER... period...

and hit the 2:15 mark of this... face f'ing melting... it gets REALLY nasty at the 2:58 mark... god...

and if you haven't seen 20ft From Stardom and heard the story of Gimme Shelter being recorded, you are missing out. You have to picture a pregnant Merry Clayton in a mink coat with a scarf on her head screaming "RAAAPE, MUUURDER!!!!," with Mick Jagger going nuts in the background. I had never picked him up shouting/clapping in the background, until i heard it on this documentary (2:20)...

since we are talking about "white rock", i'll leave it right here... however, i am SHOCKED nobody threw out STRANGLE HOLD, one of my fav songs to play on the guitar~!!!

Owenshooter....STFU! You have no idea what kind of music I love. Been to more Rolling Stones concerts that would add up higher than your IQ points.

In tribute to our false Black Jesus, I present one of the greatest Stones songs:

Wow Bernie I didn't realize that white rock was the theme of this topic and forgive the pun but I think Owen is riffting off my comment about Prince, beings someone else brought up the freak king of pop, but lets not forget rock's origins, BB KING,CHUCK BERRY AND OF COURSE THE INCOMPARABLE MUDDY WATERS, Clapton and others differ to them as the basis for rock and roll, Stevie Ray Vaughn did as well, van Halen included, everyone except those with hate recognized where rock and roll came from. So where do you stand, recognizing or hating

Pun fixed

p.s.- that is one of my least fav stones songs and doesn't come anywhere NEAR the two i posted... but, i know why many consider it so amazing...

Owenshooter, never said not to include BLACKS in the selections of greatest Rock songs.

The Rolling Stones who loved the blues and knew without the blues, Rock and Roll would not of been born. They especially loved B. B. King, as I do. I saw B. B. King in Chicago back in the 70s

Seriously? First of all singer and vocalist are probably the same thing (although I'm no musician). So it seems what you're saying is "none of your bands have an awesome writer and vocalist." And that's ridiculous. I vote you are thrown out of this thread.

Also - I shamefacedly forgot the following:

James Hendrix (lead guitarist and singer)
Eric Clapton (but mostly Cream - "Tale of Brave Ulysses" is one of my favorites) (lead guitarist and singer)
Alice in Chains and Soundgarden (if you like some of that grunge)
Clutch (super underrated and might be my second or third favorite band)
Foo Fighters (of course)

Some newer stuff I enjoy: Avenged Sevenfold, Black Keys, White Stripes, The Hold Steady, Rival Sons

We can't forget some of the first rock n roll artists out there who inspired the latter artists, like Little Richard.

Or Bobby Day

And obviously The Isley Brothers.

Some of my favorite songs come from that era.

I'm not even sure it would make my Top 100, although it does have special status with me as the first song I ever sang at karaoke. Maybe it would make my Top 100, after all...:)

I went to see Iggy Pop this summer at Riot Fest. Yes, this old bag still fights his way to the front. Iggy is 68 years old and still rocks the audience.

TGD, have you heard Royal Blood yet? Based on your "newer stuff I enjoy", I think you'll like them.

Bollocks in 2015.

I'm glad you're willing to admit your error. A couple of follow-up questions:

(1) Just out of curiousity, what does a double eye roll mean? How is it different from just a single eye roll?
(2) Do you classify Justin Bieber as rock or do you classify the bands I indicated above as pop? I'm struggling to see how my list and Justin Bieber are compatible.

Metsfanmax wrote:What's wrong with Justin Bieber?

I heard something about how he had a pet monkey, but that's all I know about him. If you're asking with what's wrong with liking his music, probably nothing since millions of people do like his music. I don't think I've ever really heard his music, so I can't opine other than to say I suspect I wouldn't like it.

However, you'll have your music snobs who refuse to listen to any bands that are "modern" (a term defined as anything released a certain date, which may or may not actually be modern) and music snobs who refuse to listen to anything popular (the more obscure the band the better). My brother, for example, is a music snob of the latter persuasion. "Ugh, you like Soundgarden? They sold a bunch of albums and therefore are automatically not as good as this random band from Brooklyn that includes goats in their ensemble, but haven't sold any albums because they don't want to lose their musical integrity."

yes, yes, bernie... we all know rock n' roll is the blues plugged in... let me illustrate this point for the children... i never liked the white stripes or jack white until i heard them blow the fucking doors off of one of everyone's favorite Son House songs, at the grammy's... they could have played any song from their catalogue at that point and they chose to RECOGNIZE!!!

the original

and then Jack White and Meg just take it to the next level and melt the faces of the audience at the grammy's

take it to the 1:53 mark if you hate the White Stripes... and the fireworks start at the 2:57 mark

the black jesus has spoken...-Jésus noir

p.s.-Quirk... you really disappointed me... what a shit band to include...

(although probably too short), Killing in the Name Of, pretty much anything by Tool but I would go with The Pot or Aenima, Enter Sandman, um... let's see... Alive, Dissident, basically anything on the first two Pearl Jam albums.

Definitely not rock songs (and thus disqualified)- anything by Michael Jackson, Imagine (and pretty much most anything by the Beatles), anything by Bob Dylan.

You beat me to Rage Against the Machine.
I was going to throw that down as a more modern option.

There are a lot of great one's to chose from though!

I suggest that anyone who would even put Michael Jackson or Imagine on the list of "Greatest Rock Songs" are not true Rock fans.

Some of Michael's early work with the Jackson Five are really cool and funky... but they are more Soul than Rock.

Course some play fast and louse with the definition of what is Rock and Roll and what ain't...
