Play maps that you've never played before, many of them and with players you haven't played with before.
Don't talk during games.
Miss the odd move here and there.
Tactics? Move first, think after.

I've learnt during History class that the Dutch have sent plenty of Lieutenants to turn countries colonial. I hereby stand by the OP. They missed the odd turn and didn't talk during their game. And we can be damn sure they moved first and thought afterwards. In Holland we call this the Golden Age (the age in which Holland killed thousands of people and got very rich because of it). I can recommend it to anyone.

we've all lived through it... sometimes, it is the only way to find enjoyment in the site... you know, go and try to learn something new or it gets stagnant... if it weren't for poly and random maps, i'd be off the site already...-Jésus noir

I went from colonel to lieutenant in two weeks.

Step-by-step

In multiplayer escalating games, fail to kill a player with overwhelming number of troops in 4/5 chances. (The chance at a decent sweep in a six-player game is at best 1/3).
Let your single player wins go from positive to negative solely based on luck.
Get noobed.

The key here is changing nothing but your ability to roll a number higher than your opponents.
