There are plenty of houses around here that go for 20-40K.

A relative of mine has a house in CA, worth about 1 million... it is single level 3 bedroom with a small front and back yard, in OK shape, but nothing fancy. My house has more living space, plus a full attic and basement (cement floor/walls, very useable), a new boiler for heat, well insulated (a BIG point in my area!), a two stall garage with an attic above the garage and a double-sized yard, right in town... some realtors might try to put it at 60K, but if I wanted to sell it, it would go for a bit more than 40K.

There are no houses for 30k in my area. You can't even get a plot of land for that price. About the only thing I've ever seen that cheap are beat up manufactured homes ready to move. You'll be lucky to find something of quality for 100k.

Per Oregon and CA.... traveled all over both extensively. There is a huge difference between values in Eastern Oregon, coastal Oregon and the various environs in between.

But... we have factories here, hunting (though its gone way downhill, according to those born and raised here), and now Marcellus Shale, but yeah.. there is a reason I am working for low wages at a nursing home.

Yeah, I know. Mexico is not a bad place, from what I here, if you stay in the right areas (beyond that, if you don't look and act native.... watch out). However, I prefer the places that only used to be Mexico .

There is an ice cream shop here where I got an organic home-made avacado ice cream with himalayan pink salt. MMMMM.
The to biggest differences I've noticed so far are
1: wildlife. Maplewood was teming with squirrels, with occasional rabbits, deer, racoons, possums, wild turkeys, groundhogs, not to mention the bird life, and the evening chorus of cicadas/katydids/crickets. Here I've seen the north end of a south-facing lizard as itr scuttled off, and what may have been a prarie dog or a gopher - dissappeared to quick to tell. Plus eagles or sump'n (too far away to tell) and a brace of pigeons.
2: There are more swimming-pool supplies shops than nail salons.

Visit some of the local parks, even the city ones, for wildlife... not sure exactly where you are, but there should be more than what you are seeing immediately. One thing, though.. most wildlife tends to key in on water. Even a small stream with just a bit of vegetation around it will suffice. The water and vegetation are key.
