I have been lumped into the "Fairly Newb to Very Newb" category and I agree. I have only played a few mafia games on CC, but I have played several more on another site. However, I am not very experienced...blah blah blah...
I am a HUGE fan of Breaking Bad. If I had to choose I would select it as my favorite TV series.
As far as characters that I think are a MUST for this Mafia include:
1. Walt
2. Jesse
3. Hank
4. Gus
5. Mike
6. Saul
However, just because Walt is the main character and since I know how the series evolves, I do not believe he necessarily is "Town" ....perhaps he needs a solo win or something similar.
Jesse, maybe a village idiot type of role.
Hank, cop. no doubt about it.
Gus, Mafia
Mike - I would think a Strongman/ninja type of role.
Saul - Walt and Jesse's lawyer...
Those are 6 roles that I believe are for sure here somewhere.
Other roles from the series that could be involved:
Badger and Skinny Pete (Both allied with Jesse and maybe by extension Walt)
We have Gus's crew and The Mexican cartel crew. I would bet at least 2 mafias in this game.

As far as the posting right now. D1 is always strange and no one really knows where to lean. I am OK with lynching a non-active, but I think the game is still too early to see who will be "inactive"
I also do not like attacking someone just because they are a Vet or a noob.
I couldn't agree more with all you said keener. As another guy who's seen the entire show, I was thinking that these 6 were there for certain.
Regarding walt though, I was initially thinking the same, but if we read between the lines in what strike replied... it seems like he had to do something simple regarding walt's alignment (town), or at least that's what I understand. Not sure there is that complexity in the walt/jessie relationship translated in the alignments.
hank, definitely a cop, but my guess is thrid party with his side kick Gomez.
hum... could there be a walt and a heisenberg impersonated by 2 different players?
there has to be some strange thing in the setting... all official games have! and right now, I think that anyone who has seen the show would agree that walt/heisenberg is too much of a loose canon to be just another townie.. the show is called "breaking bad" refering to him obviously.
