Go game

Postby lord twiggy1 on Sat May 19, 2007 10:49 am

this is a game were you put black and white dots on a board and the winner is the pearson with the most points by the end of a game. the game ends when 50 moves have been made by each player.

No because if you surround someone else's dot it goes away, if I remember correctly. Very hard when your playing someone who's older than you and it's your first time playing.

I tap my forest for mana, putting you in check, I then push my island-walking zombie into the red-zone, and move my bishop to 32 DD; I now have a royal flush.
Your move Twiggy...

Yeah, I play a little Go (or Goe) with a club at school. When you surround a piece (or a number of pieces) with a group of your own, all the opponent's pieces in that area die and he can no longer place any pieces in there. The game ends when nobody can legally put a piece down. Then, the number of squares that each player controls is tallied (even if there isn't a piece there), and the person with more squares wins. Btw, it's a 19x19 square, so a game can take a while. :D

Sigh.

The game does not end after 50 moves. It ends once both players have passed, after all productive moves have been played.

Certain versions, usually simplified games designed to teach beginners (like atari go) will end after a certain number of moves have been played. But a full game often lasts 250-300 moves, depending upon the style of the players involved.

However, if there is anyone here who actually knows how to play and would like a game, look me up. I'm a 1 dan AGA; you can usually find me at the Friday meetings of the Triangle Go Club in Raleigh, NC. I also play online on KGS, under the handle "Aimless," I play as a 2 kyu there.

(If you don't know what the terms kyu and dan mean, then it's a safe assumption that I'm substantially better than you. I don't mind teaching, however.)

This is almost, but not quite, true.

First, there are only two restrictions on where you may play; you may not place a stone if doing so would cause it to be removed from the board immediately, and you may not immediately recapture in a ko (a situation involving repetitive captures of the same stone) without playing a move elsewhere. There is no restriction against placing a stone on an intersection in which a group of yours was previously captured, so long as it does not violate the conditions above.

Secondly, the game ends when both players pass, which is usually after all productive (but generally not all legal) moves have been played. This is a minor quibble, but an important one. There is a reductionist version of the Go rule set in which both players keep playing until there are no legal moves remaining; it's not played in practice because games under this rules set tend to last several million moves (simulated by computer, of course), but it is a useful consideration in game theory.

Bump.

I was kind of hoping there would be actual players around here, so I didn't want this thread to disappear quite so soon.

I guess that's an unrealistic hope. :(

No I agree with you there. Twiggy is a rehabilitated member of the community now, he just got off to a bad start. Ranck however is still my least favourite person on the site...

I tried understanding the rules once or twice in a MUD (for solving riddles and getting XP, you know), but either they were badly explained or I missed something.

Sorry, I don't actually know how to play. And every time I tried to learn I just had the irresistable urge to type 'move on 32 DD'. Cursed I guess...

I play Pente which is a sort of simplified version of Go which no one has ever heard of. I would like to learn Go someday though.

I play - well I used to play at Uni, bloody hard to get a game where I am. Is there any good internet sites for it - like this one though not RT.

Its a safe bet to say you'll be substantially better than me if you've worked out your handicap.

I usually played quick games on the small board (or atari go on the wee board) not played too many of the full games.
