Autism Spectrum, OCD and CC

Postby BoganGod on Fri Sep 20, 2013 11:00 am

Dear devoted readers, stalkers, trolls, and Bruceswar. I have a a serious matter to discuss with you all. Naturally the discuss must be flippant in keeping with my nature and limited brain power. I'm sure I'm not the only person to notice that a fair percentage of this site fall somewhere on the autism spectrum. OCD would appear to be prevalent as well. <Yes, I have my keys, the oven is off and I locked the house>
Little give aways such as
- Taking everything literally, even blatantly apparent irony, hyperbole or over the top exaggerated satire
- Need for rigid structure, incredibly change resistant
- Faculty for numbers, dice calculators, odds, etc. Yet little or poor communication skills

There are a few other factors/symptoms that I won't get into lest this become an essay. There are stand up funny people on this site, and what cracks me up is so many people are not intentionally funny. Please change the name and/or gender to protect those that so blithely gift us with humour.

Example 1.
Setting the scene.
Escalating quad, set value getting higher. Close to nut cutting time. My team has 4 players, have already killed one person from team2. Someone from team2 has a set on 3cards. Cashes, deploys brilliantly, attacks intelligently, forts smartly. Sets her teammate up to walk the board. Teammate promptly walks the board, game over.
What I do.
I congratulate the person that walked the board on their wall. Also post in game chat, well done etc. Lucky having that 3card set, but brilliant play by - and I listed the two players that finished the game so strongly.
Things get weird
Another player on their team, gets mighty offended. Throws toys out of cot, accusing me of belittling the achievements of the ENTIRE TEAM!!!! by dwelling on the brilliance of two players. The toy throwing player thought because I complimented Big Nose, and Jug Ears on their play I was not showing respect to Bowl Cut and Snaggle Tooth.

Please describe some examples of weird and out there behaviour. Things like the chap who in all seriousness thought Arms Race was a stupid map as didn't give a realistic to scale representation of cold war era USA and USSR asset placement, potential and potency.
So I think I'm going beyond the realms of politeness by giving credit where it is due rather than a perfunctory gg in chat. Bowl Cut thinks I'm insulting him(Bowl Cut also thinks I'm going to hell for claiming to be a gigilo on my wall).

What you've got there is a failure to communicake. Some guys you just can't reach.

Ah, the HardAttack approach with a twist. Rather than posting music video clips, your quoting lyrics.

"So you get what we got here last week. That was the way he was, well he gets it. I don't like it any more than you do"

Saw GNR use your illusions II, Auckland NZ 1993. Was psyched and maybe built it up a bit to much, possibly anticipated more than they could deliver. Not even in my top 20 concert experiences. White Zombie on the other hand! AstroCreep2000, best mosh outside of the metallica snakepit.

BG, I hear ya. What I don't get are the people who flip out in speed games. In a 24-hour game, they might be nice, civil folks, but you go on a kill run and fail at the very end, and they cry, "Suicider!"

Now, I figure that if someone's come across a website for playing online Risk, they're at least reasonably intelligent, but then they expect someone me to not take a chance on winning the game? OK, so maybe the odds weren't good. Maybe I should have just carded and let the next player sweep the board. But speed really messes people up. Crack, too, but speed is pretty bad.

We need more posts like this...very entertaining.

I would also like to add to your list people that fail to try and understand the map before starting the game...or even during the game. i am guessing these same people refuse to use a GPS or ask for directions Here is a recent example from a tournament I am in played on my home map:)

In this case, the player's identity was not protected....I apologize to Teach42 for using him/her as an example :)

http://www.conquerclub.com/game.php?game=13138116

Here is the chat copy and pasted for those of you to lazy to click the link :)

2013-08-25 20:49:40 - teach42: What the hell is this?!?!?! LOL
2013-08-26 07:01:10 - ChrisPond: haha. i thought that the first time i played it as well. good luck!
2013-08-26 07:10:52 - teach42: Have to admit, you made the rigth choice for this tourney :) There's no way I'll figure this out in time to stand a chance. But good luck!
2013-08-29 08:58:59 - teach42: Clearly I'm doing something wrong, considering the amount of territory you're taking every turn.
2013-08-30 05:37:47 - ChrisPond: that is becuase of what i have taken so far. since you only get 3 for a deploy no matter the amount of territories, you need to take important ter.
2013-08-30 05:38:29 - ChrisPond: it takes a little while to win or kill someone here on trench, but i will have you soon
2013-08-30 05:39:09 - ChrisPond: this is a great map once you learn it and find a strategy
2013-08-30 19:01:10 - teach42: Ok, since yer going to win anyway (I'm 100% confident in that), want to lay a little knowledge on me? What's your strategy here?
2013-08-30 22:41:14 - ChrisPond: you need to take bonuses to increase deploy instead of the easy single neutrals. read through the key or legend at the top of the map. playing a game and getting crushed always helps me as well on a new map.
2013-08-31 13:23:46 - teach42: Ok, this is going to sound stupid, but I always scrolled down so I could see the full map.... and NEVER noticed the key at the very top!! Always just passed right over that! LOL THat MIGHT have helped just a touch :)
2013-08-31 13:24:09 - teach42: Holy crap, that would have been helpful

This one happened last year, but it was probably the most memorable run in with a noob that I've had

In game chat:
2012-11-13 03:09:46 - Straw Hat: bah
2012-11-13 03:10:42 - Shannon Apple: gg all
2012-11-13 03:11:45 - Straw Hat: not aware of the totality of the rules
2012-11-13 03:17:42 - Shannon Apple: As you kill people, you take their spoils. That's how I was able to do as I did.

He then took it to messaging telling me that I cheated since I took advantage of his noobness. lol. I was a low ranking stripe at the time who played way too much classic and didn't actually have a strategy for this map as such. It took a lot of convincing this dude that I did not take advantage of his noobness, when I was in fact also a noob.

(and... shaddap bogan!)

Haven't been called a twat, recently. As I have stopped slumming it and hanging around with pommie backpackers. Every english girl becomes an essex girl on arrival in Australia or New Zealand. However I get called a c*#t on a regular basis, executive chef by profession, have also moonlighted as a bouncer over the years. Have a beautiful and blandly generic response to being called a c*#t, - "I am what I eat, having a bad day arsehole?" So Shannon is it true that HardAttack is posting lovely video clips because Bruceswar wants him to atone for being such a twat?

@Chris Pond, lovely example of the sometimes vapid approach to game play exhibited by a lot of us at different times. Opposite end of the scale from the more autistic/OCD(yes I know terms are not interchangeable, allow me some grammatical laziness please). Would much rather play against a pleasant scatter brain, than a skilled player that gets nothing about interpersonal communication and feels that a compliment to their team mate is an insult to them.

Yes my dear Bogan, I have noticed a few examples of spectrumy behaviour & OCD, as I believe I mentioned to you in 2010. Notably:
Tournaments.
Clans.
Mods.
C&A forum.
Scoreboard.
Let us be honest with each other, if the real world met our needs we'd be out there in it cooking up a storm wouldn't we? Much happier to snuggle in here where we can build such a safe and predictable environment.
I do spend some effort avoiding the folks who are scarlet on a scale in which I mark myself no more than shocking pink. But I think like you I have a sneaking admiration for the folks who will go overboard, like totally bananas, when the 1s & digits start lining up against them on a CC map. Yes I admire the folks who are totally unhappy and unashamed to say it, when they suspect an emotive human intelligence and not just a computer is lining up a series of thoughts and course of action which is antithetical to their own perceived plan of the order of things. I honour you, you will throw the toys out of the pram and then run them over, you are true to the spirit of this place, you are its true achievement.

Similar situation happened to me a while back. I was also just trying to be polite and commenting on how the other team had loaded one person and that person delivered, but I see how my comment sounded insincere.

2010-11-05 22:43:43 - The Voice: Great game HH. You singlehandedly won it for your team.
2010-11-06 00:28:20 - Hellfire Hotties: Well thanks Voice- obviously I could've split those troops up a bit better, but if I hadn't managed to get you it would've ended a lot differently
2010-11-06 00:33:09 - Hellfire Hotties: It's not all the way over, but I'm WAY more relieved- that turn helped. That was a great game!
2010-11-06 07:18:02 - Sniper08: gg
2010-11-06 13:08:28 - Master Chief: Hey, The Voice, as far as I can see, it looks like I'm still alive, and I kinda kicked your ass a bit that last turn.
2010-11-06 13:08:57 - Master Chief: Every turn we played, we ALL talked before we took our turn, and we decided on what to do. So next time you say shit like that, get your facts straight.
2010-11-06 13:10:49 - Master Chief: other than that.... gg T1.
2010-11-06 13:26:49 - Hellfire Hotties: OK MC- I don't think he meant it like that- just that I had a key turn. There was no insult intended.
2010-11-06 13:27:13 - Hellfire Hotties: Great game Team 1- you guys were tough!
2010-11-06 13:37:39 - Hellfire Hotties: And actually Voice- it was MC's idea to go after you solely, so he should get all of the credit. Have a great weekend everyone!
2010-11-08 09:04:26 - The Voice: Fair enough. I definitely did not mean to sound insincere. Good game all!

I love it mate. Very nicely written post. Yes I do have some admiration for those that react as violently to the vagaries of the dice as I used to in my 20's when someone would try to cock block me at my local glassing barn. I love that some people can believe with no self awareness or sense of irony, that this site was built solely to bait them into damaging their computer whilst frothing at the mouth.

@The Voice - Mate you were paying someone a compliment, only a small minded, insecure, touchy little attention whore would have taken offence. According to how I read your comments. English is not my first language so maybe there is some hidden nuance in your words, designed to needle part of the opposing team. Brilliant example of what I'm talking about.
