Actually mainstream music sucks for the most part

watched Fuse for two hours and only heard one good song(besides Linkin Park) "Lips like morphine" -Kill Hannah
rest was ok.

I think it comes down to the artist, and whether he has skill, and substance.

old school rap/hip-hop is awesome, the new rap is very plain and quite boring, but in anycase rock isn't better :x

Shut your fool mouth up when talking bout metal,
I'll eat you up just like Hansel and Grettel,
I really like it and think it's just grand,
You're thinking of Slipknot and not a good band,
I'm going to drive to your house and shoot you with a gun,
I do it all the time I'm a gangsta it's fun,
I'd use the word 'nigga' here but I can't cos I'm white,
But apparently if you're black then that word's alright,
Pimping in the hood with an expensive car,
I hang with Rasputin and the Russian Tzar,
They like me because I know lots of big booty bitches,
And because I have a fly taste in britches,
Your family will bury you in a little wooden casket,
Because I got well mad when carrying a musket,
Let's smoke bit blunts and get really high,
Steal sweets from children and make them cry,
We'll get some steroids so we look like 50-Cent,
Rent a big mansion then not pay the rent,
My album is wicked it went quad platinum,
My ho's love me even when I'm slapping 'em,
I'm a blood so I'm off to kill a crip,
I'll drown him in a bowl of dorito's dip,
I'm done with dope rhymes and I've served you good,
Rap is teh awesome and it's not crud!

Yeah, word up!

A rapper cannot be that smart to make a 'song' like that.

Honestly, i've never heard a rap song thats not about partying, sex, drugs, violence, or about how much money they have while at the same time they're ghetto. I don't really care too much for that subject matter, nor is rap in general appealing to me.
Maybe thats because I don't really care for it and haven't heard more than whats forced upon me during daily life--Radio, loud people rapping to themselves near me when i'm standing outside, parties, etc.
Now I wont deny the talent, as freestyle requires you to be intelligent and quick if its good at all.. I can honestly say I respect that.. I sure as hell couldn't do that if my life depended on it.

In the end i'd take rock or metal, anything like that, over rap.. But to say that all rap in general is shit is kinda close-minded.

I beg to differ. Mos Def has more lyrical ingenuity than Tupac could ever muster. Sure he often had a good message, and his flow was tight, but lyrical style? Nah... Hundreds of rappers got him beat on complex rhymes, interplay of metaphors, dual or triple imagery...

I cant listen to any of the c-rap on the radio. I do however like some of the less known artists: Blackalicous, Lyrics Born, DJ Shadow, Dan the Automator, Del tha funky homosapien, Mos Def, Antipop Consortium, Quannum Artists, Atmosphere and of course "Wu-Tang Clan aint nothin to f*ck wit!".

Yeh its good stuff. Quannum have got a good roster, one of the few genuinely successful labels still putting out quality stuff.

Mos Def doesn't have much to rap about. I mean Mrs. Fat Booty? Compared to Changes? I'm sorry, 2Pac owned rap and died owning it. Even 2Pac's worst songs have good flow and rhyme. Mos Def is good, but does not stand out. (Maybe "I against I")

Well here's how it started, I heard you on the radio,
Talking 'bout rap, saying all that crap,
About how we sample, here's an example,
You think we'll let you get away with that,
You criticize our methods, of how we make records,
You said it wasn't art, so now we're gonna rip you apart.

Stop. Check it out my man,
This is the music of a hip hop band,
Jazz, well you can call it that,
But this jazz retains a new format.

Point. When you misjudged us,
Speculated & created a fuss,
You've made the same mistake politicians have....
Talkin' all that jazz.

Talk, well I heard talk is cheap,
But like beauty, talk is just skin deep,
And when you lie & talk a lot,
People tell you to step off a lot.

You see you misunderstood, a sample's just a tact,
It's a portion of my method, a tool in fact,
It's only of importance when I make it a priority,
And what we sample is loved by the majority,
But you're a minority in terms of thought,
Narrow minded and poorly taught,
About hip hop aim or the silly game,
To erase my music, so no one can use it,
You step on us and we'll step on you,
Can't have your cake & eat it too....
Talkin' all that jazz.

Lies, that's when you hide the truth,
It's when you talk more jazz than proof,
And when you lie and address something you don't know,
It's so whack that it's bound to show.

When you lie about me & the band we get angry,
Whip out my pen and start writing again,
And the things we write are always true sucker,
So get a grip 'cos now I'm talking 'bout you.

Seems to me that you have a problem,
So we can see what we can do to solve them,
You say rap's a fad, you must be mad,
'Cos we're so bad we get respect you never had.

Tell the truth James Brown was old,
'Till Eric & Rakim came out with I Got Soul,
Rap brings back old R&B and if we would not,
People would have forgot.

We want to make this perfectly clear,
We're talented & strong & have no fear,
Of those who choose to judge, but lack pizazz....
Talkin' all that jazz.

Now we're not trying to be a boss to you,
We just want to get across to you,
That if you're talking jazz the situation is a no win,
You might even get hurt my friend.

Stetsasonic the hip hop band
And like Sly & The Family Stone we will stand,
Up for the music we love and play,
And for the song we sing today.

For now let's set the record straight,
Later on we can have a forum & a formal debate,
But it's important to remember though,
What you reap is what you sow....
Talkin' all that jazz.

Yeh Mos Def certainly has a particular style which certainly isn't for everyone... He is in no way my favourite rapper, but I just thing labelling Tupac as the be all and end all of rap music is a complete disservice to hundreds of very very talented rappers who still continue to play the game. He was a legend, and an incredibly talented rapper, but he wasn't a patch on old Tribe or Souls of Mischief stuff (to me at least) and he's got nothing on peeps like El-P on lyrical complexity and style, and El-P's still going strong.

He's the pinnacle of the 90's hardcore style, with more substance than Wu-Tang, but that's only one type of rap.

Anyway, nice to see some CC heads reppin hip-hop. You ever listen to UK stuff Psilocbin?

How old do you think I am?

You do realise you're writing off possibly the most popular and widespread type of music in the world as 'chav' music! Hip-hop has been around since the 70s. The whole 'chav' label has been around for what... 3 or 4 years?

Bring on the rap! Don't see any problem with it when it is done properly.

I have 4 songs by Mos Def, and no dude, sorry, I don't listen to UK hip-hop. I try to be diverse and get a bit of everything into my taste.

DUH! Rock and Metal not only rely on best skill, but don't endorse crime.
