Can anyone explain the following:

Global warming stopped 16 years ago, reveals Met Office report quietly released... and here is the chart to prove it

The figures reveal that from the beginning of 1997 until August 2012 there was no discernible rise in aggregate global temperatures
This means that the ‘pause’ in global warming has now lasted for about the same time as the previous period when temperatures rose, 1980 to 1996

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/ ... ve-it.html

Another critic said that climate expert Professor Judith Curry had protested at the way she was represented in our report. However, Professor Curry, a former US National Research Council Climate Research Committee member and the author of more than 190 peer-reviewed papers, responded: ‘A note to defenders of the idea that the planet has been warming for the past 16 years. Raise the level of your game. Nothing in the Met Office’s statement .  .  . effectively refutes Mr Rose’s argument that there has been no increase in the global average surface temperature for the past 16 years.

‘Use this as an opportunity to communicate honestly with the public about what we know and what we don’t know about climate change. Take a lesson from other scientists who acknowledge the “pause”.’

The Met Office now confirms on its climate blog that no significant warming has occurred recently: ‘We agree with Mr Rose that there has only been a very small amount of warming in the 21st Century.’

I can explain that, don't ever fucking read the Daily Mail. Unless you're particularly interested in what celebrity has been spotted with cellullite.

That's a crap explanation because it fails to address the content of the message.

See? That's how you explain something. You're missing that second part (the part after " That's a crap explanation...").

Your turn! :D

One explanation I've heard is that it takes as much energy to change ice at 0°C into water at 0°C as it takes to heat water from 0°C to 80°C.
As temperatures went up the polar caps and glaciers started absorbing the heat more quickly (yes, the larger the temperature difference, the faster two systems exchange energy, as their temperatures approach each other, the process slows down) but remained frozen because of the aforementioned property of H2O. Essentially, they're now absorbing heat at roughly the same rate as the temperature is rising. As they absorb more and more heat, they'll start melting faster and faster, and eventually they won't be able to keep up any more. At that point we'll see a spike in the global average temperature and it'll resume rising.

Do it. I triple-dog dare you.

I might dig around and find that lecture about the guy dicussing the net benefits of global warming--as oppose to the typical presentation of global warming, which tends to be nothing-but-costs analysis.

Whatever the explanation may be, what I found striking were the "record high" areas. Just above average for everyone would be less interesting but record highs do beg certain questions.

I'm not sure who exactly that video is meant for but it seems extremely dumbed down to me.

Applying this reasoning to the LHC and putting the outcome "black hole is created, earth is destroyed" in the bottom right spot would lead us to the conclusion that we shouldn't build the LHC.

The probabilities of the events matter.

I've been subject to three graphics in this thread. The first shows it is hot. The second shows that three years prior, it was cold. Juan has a lot of things on it. What does it all mean? Does anyone have a graphic comparing those three graphics?

Every farmer and apiarist I know has radically changed the way they raise crops in the last 10 years.
Considering these guys financially live or die by the weather, you may want to follow our lead.

The climate is changing. Good for some, worse for others, depending on how it affects you and yours.

The how's and why's? Irrelevant. If it's global warming due to carbon emission, there is no way and no how that this corporate world will be able to change things significantly in time to make an impact, never mind reverse it.

If it's part of a planetary cyclical event, then it's beyond our control.

The fact that most do nothing about it in the ways of adapting or preparing is Darwin in motion.

Keep arguing MoFo's! The shit house in on fire, and yer arguing over two or three ply.

Although (apparently) the average temperature on Earth has not changed/has insignificantly changed in the past 16 years, the climate is changing--but this means that in general colder climates will become warmer, and warmer climates will become warmer.

So, areas which yield lower productivity of various crops will now become more productive, and I see this as a good thing.

What are the net effects of climate change?

Does anyone really know, and if they can't answer that, then why follow their policy prescriptions?
