Could you stop putting the flashlight underneath your face trying to scare us

It is a modern age we dont need bodies to fight as much besides our enemy can't even be found (most of the time)

Why through Lives into the field when we dont even know what we are doing right now

If someone is trying to kill you and/or your comrades, and you decide to throw your hands up and surrender because you "don't believe in killing human beings", then yes, you're a pussy.

Were any of those people killed on 9-11 your comrades? They were mine.

This thread is not about debating the war, it started out by just asking people if they were, are currently, or plan to be in the military. Some decided to chime in with other comments.

If you chose not to fight, fine. Fortunately for you, there are people like me and MANY others, who have fought to protect you.

Don't worry, while you run, we'll stand and fight and make sure noone hurts you.

Once again, this thread is not about debating the war. Therefore, I will not respond to your question here.

If you feel like slamming the military, the people who join, or what seems to be the common flame here, the reasons for joining the military, then I'll be happy to pound any arguments into the ground.

Complete bollocks. Some branches of extremist Islam (e.g. Al-Qaeda) do want global Islamic law, but thats A FEW EXTREMISTS! Thats like saying that countries like people in the UK want to lynch black people because a few guys in the KKK do who say their christians.

Don't be such an ignorant fool. Being a vet doesn't excuse biggoted and xenophobic sensationalism.

anyone who thinks we arent doing any good in iraq is a mindless idiot. if we pulled out of there right now the terrorists would think were sissies and it would leave us open for an attack. i know that doesnt sound like it would be true, but think about it. if we pulled into america the terrorist organizations would be free to make bombs and plot attacks on us. all with little resistance from local police. and they could cut them down like a mower an grass. i support this 100% and if you think that the war is pointless, then like i said, your a mindless idiot

This topic just turned into debating US policies on war. If the US really wants out of Iraq then why the hell did they vote for Bush's second term.

I was in the Finnish military for 6 months, just basic training and basic anti-tank missile training. Just part of the mandatory military service we still stand by. I had some of my worst moments in life in the army, but I also got to fire 2 bazookas so it balanced out in the end.

Because of my family background I would be proud to follow in my fathers before me in the military. Even if many have died because of it, I would join.

The question is what branch.

IZ Man. I salute you.

I was not as much talking about politics just making examples on how the good people in our armed forces have contibuted & served our country. That patriotism is not what it used to be. Pride, sense of loyalty, and civil defense, where did it go? sense of duty & justice ?

the military teaches you many things. accountability, teamwork, responsiblity and, many other skills that you take with you in life.

that's all folks.

I considered joining the Royal Air Force when I was a teenager, but then decided that I didn't want to sign 5 years of my life over to the government's bully boys, especially when I don't trust my government's motives.

Having said that, I have a lot of respect for people who have served in the armed forces, it's just not my cup of tea.

... Military service in the United States is strictly volunteer. That is one of many reasons it is the best on the planet. Everybody joined of his or her own free will. Certainly a small percentage of loser types develop the "F*ck this Sh*t" attitude after they've joined and realize they have to take on some responsibilities and pay the consequences for their actions, but they are a relatively small group.

... Some people say we should have mandatory service, like say Korea... But that's a bad idea, imho. Granted, it's their military service time that tends to make Korean men some of the toughest and respectable people I've ever met, but mandatory service runs contrary to the ideas of liberty.

... Politics has absolutely nothing to do with military service. The military is anti-political, as a body. Sure, soldiers have their own opinions and they have the right to vote, like anybody else, but as a whole, the military is a tool of the state, and nothing more - be it run by Dems, Republicans, Libertarians, Greens, whatever.

... I highly recommend military service to anybody who wishes to "graduate to manhood". It changes everything, even long after you've left it behind. There were times I hated it, but looking back, it was the best thing that I've ever done.

...

whats with all the guys bagging your soldiers???? In australia we never ever disrespect our soldiers, well the lefties do, but they bag out everyone so i guess its to be expected, any intelligent person who disagrees with wars such as the iraq war would attack the politicians not the the soldiers, soldiers are awesome, they make a living out of serving their country, asides from emergency services and the like, not many people live for much except themselves now days.

Well said. Part of me does agree with some sort of mandatory service. I believe Finland, Norway & Germany require it. I believe it helps instill a sense of pride of where your from, and a sense of duty. It doesn't have to be military service either. In Germany, consciencious objectors may do their service as civil servants instead of the military.

It is a slippery slope though. If I had to vote on it, I would say no.

There were certainly times when I said "what the hell am I doing?". Typically those thoughts arive when you show up at basic training.
Later I realized that it was a good thing I was saying that to myself, it meant they were doing their job.

There are 30+ year olds I know that still have the maturity of a 17 yr old. There are 18 yr old military personnel that have the maturity of a 35 yr old. THAT'S what the service will do for you. Make you grow up.

But hey, some 17 & 18 yr olds would prefer to keep their maturity at that level. Their choice.........
