Do you have an Ipod?

Style is completely subjective. In my opinion the Ipod styling is superior to any of its competitors at the moment. To you your Sony is the epitemy of style but to me it looks like a purple bar of soap...

As for the technology well you seem to have refuted that in your last paragraph. You say the Ipod has basic and far from revolutionary technology yet you are happy with a 'pretty basic design' because thats all you want.

Style is subjective which is why I made the design of the Walkman a lower priority. What I was arguing is that a few people earlier claimed things like the iPod is a revolutionary design or one of the greatest music devices ever invented. It's not at all and that's what I was saying. There's nothing wrong with a basic design but it's when people try and claim that the iPod is superior to other products I have to point out their mistake.

es true but nobody was listening to them
Itunes opened the market

I advertised all last week on college campuses with 1000 flyers
and I bet out of all the listeners almost 3/4 of them downloaded on I tunes

This is a somewhat invalid argument. Itunes is so widely used because it is the software of preference for the iPod user. I don't have the facts to hand but it wouldn't surprise me if 75% of mp3 player owners have iPods so it's not surprising that 75% of people use Itunes. This doesn't make them better, it makes them dominant.

First when I said they opened podcasting I meant to the older and your generations who didn't know about RSS

They Layout a directory that makes it east to enjoy free media (I think thats the way it should be as well)

The Design is most defiantly subjective

Also Mac products are made with better parts (clearly)[go to a tech place and ask them if they get any thing from apple]

The Ipod just has Battery issues

But it has revolutionized musical society and It now plays a part in our lives or we would be talking about it

millej11 is spot on, in fact I'd probably put the record player at number 1 as it brought music ownership to the masses. I probably use my record player more than I use my walkman.

Most people who have an iPod think they are royalty. I tell them about my SanDisk Sansa and everyone else (you know who you are) is like "so, iPod Nanos are cooler"

Comparing the 4G version of both

*the Sansa has a full color screen for everything, compared to the "color screen" of the Nano (the top bar that shows the time is blue and whatever you are selecting is blue. The rest is a bland white background. Cool! Blandness!)
*can store video (although i have not tried that yet. you probably can't fit much of it)
*built-in radio (instead of having to buy one for the Nano)
*has a free trial to Rhapsody for 6 months of free songs.
*And it cost 20 euros less.

Yes it seems like a good Buy

BUT

It wont last you long enough and It wont upgrade as efficiently

Trust me I have had every device and nothing comes close to ipod

Also the royalty thing is nonsense and you can say that with anything

This is a vital merit in my opinion. You cannot argue that any other MP3 player brought on the 'MP3 age' in the same way as the Ipod did. I KNOW that it may not be a technological revolution, but the way it was produced, marketed and entered into popular culture has brought on pretty revolutionary changes in the music market. Itunes and legal music downalds are an obvious one.

I'm a DJ and I mainly play Hip-Hop and Drum n Bass. DnB has gone through a minor revolution in the last few years in that no-one buys tape packs and CDs anymore, let alone vinyl (unless you're a DJ yourself). People buy MP3s. This has forced the industry as a whole to react and change. There are lables which purely put out MP3 releases. It has revitalised some tired old names because they can put out tracks without the need to pay for album sleeves, distro and suchlike. All this has happened because people want to buy MP3s, and people want to buy MP3s because they use MP3 players. People use MP3 players because of Apple and their Ipod.

I'd also argue that Napster, as the original popular P2P program, gets a reasonably close second place, but the Ipod takes the lead in revolutionising the way we listen to music, even if the technology and package are not revolutionary in themsleves.

And yes, I'd put the record player at the number 1 spot overall, especially as a DJ. When you get into Hip-Hop you learn that its so much more than a player... its an instrument.

I have a shuffle. The Shuffle itself is great, but I absolutely HATE being forced to use iTunes with it. I wish I could just copy and paste songs onto it like I can my other MP3 player.

shuffles are great value and memory but lack a key part of the Ipod, the screen.

I'm perfectly fine without having a screen. It means I can still use it without needing to take it out of my pocket (though, a hold switch would've been nice).

it wasn't downloading the songs I had a problem with. In fact, I've never touched the iTunes store in my life. The problem is just that I hate having to mess with iTunes, and its relationship with the Shuffle.

and sense my hard-drive crashed, my MP3 player is completely fine, but when I plug my Shuffle into a computer with iTunes that doesn't have the same song list, I can't add any more songs without deleting all the songs on my Shuffle.

where's the "no I don't own one because I don't know exactly what they do because I'm apathetic towards them and might like them but have no clue due to my extreme apathy towards things in general" option? Cause that's what I'd vote for.
