initial troop deployment is solution for deadbeats

Postby Spritzking on Tue May 01, 2007 4:35 am

On this forum a lot of solutions are given for deadbeats. mostly they say: kill all newbies

I saw initial troop deployment on the to do list in the "pending-suite"

I think initial troop deloyment is the solution for deadbeats.

I will explain in freestyle and sequential

in Sequential a game has been set up. The first player goes in the deployemnt fase and deploys all his armies. then on and on till the last player. if someone (a new recruit that is not coming back after singing up) joins a game but misses his deployment fase he his kicked out, without the loss/win of points. New recruits that only join wont come back for their deployment. if they do come back it is more fun and we will have another member.

In freestyle it goes slightly different. Then a new recruit that joins as last player, could easily just deploy. Thats why we shoul prevent new recruits of joining a freestyle game as the last player. (new recruits can still join any game or set up a game)

Also there is another advantage of this deployment type when talking about freestyle games: Nowadays the player that joins last does have a huge advantage over the other players, for he can make his turn first (i have 2 countries in australia and another fellow too. if he is on his turn first he can wipe me out 1 of them and i will have just 1 country left against 3 of him.. almost impossible to gain. Initial troop deployment would prevent this and give equal chances to equal people. (besides: i like people that create games more then people that join as the last player)

in short: Get initial troop deployment out of the pending and put it on the to do list... it will for sure handle a lot of new recruit deadbeat problems...

The problem with choosing where to deploy initial troops is that whoever goes first gets too much of an advantage.

so if you were first you could take a whole continent and put your armies in stack friendly positions, if you are remotely intelligent you will have the game won before anyone else has deployed there troops........

nope... you wont be able to attack the first turn. and you wont be able to see the deployments till every one has deployed

but how can you know where to deploy your own troops? surely some territories would be empty with others having 2 or 3 ppl trying to deploy on it. i think this is an idea which is worth suggesting, however i cant ever see anythin except a completely random drop being fair.

I think someone suggested that before. Everyone deploys without seeing the others, and whenever two or more people go for the same territiory, the computer randomly assigns it to one of them.

The last person to join can also go first in sequential, depending on luck of the draw

ok i will explain this a little bit. this has indeed bit suggested before but is on the pending list (where i want to get it off)

every one gets countries (with just 1 army)

then you get in hand the number of countriesx2 in armies. so if you own 10 countries you have 10 on board and 20 in hand. then, you will start deploying (one after another) This is not seen by anyone till the deployment fase is over

Spritzking may well have found something here...

I like the point you are making about booting DB's if they don't deploy...

Note this won't affect team games as new recruits can't join em...

C.

PS Troop deployment is done in the board game - I like the idea of choosing your starts and then seeing where everyone else has gone for...

PPS All 20 on Siam please!!

placement

Postby Grizbr on Wed May 02, 2007 7:09 pm

What you r discribing is what happens in a sametime game when playing RiskII. I have played it many times over the years on other sites. There is little advantage in going first. If u put all 20 on Siam then some joker puts all 20 of his on Indonesia! you both kill each other and someone else wins. lol :D

The other players deployments wouldn't be shown until everyone had deployed their troops and the game was ready to start.

I think this game type gives too much advantage to the player that goes first. They could start with a pile of 20+ armies and easily take over a continent the first turn.

I dont necessarily think that 3 armies automatically placed on all your territories is the best way to start the game, but I haven't heard a better idea yet to replace it.

when we play risk in at our home. it is deployment, but a maximum of 4 per country... so maybe put in a maximum of 4/5 per country?

I really like the difference between CC and risk. it is a viable option as an option, but should not be installed as the permannet setup

In proper risk, you only deploy (I think) about 3 armies at a time, this is the only fair way to do it so the first player doesnt get too big an advantage.

The problem with this is that it could take weeks before a game even starts. For example, in a 6 player classic game you start with 21 armies and 7 countries, leaving 14 armies to deploy. At 3 per go it would take 5 turns each before you even roll a dice.

Imagine it for a 3 player game on World 2.1 - you would have made 25 turns before you even start round 1! If each player took a full 24 hours to make each move you are looking at 75 days, or two and a half months before you play! This would not only get rid of deadbeats, but probably every player on the site as well.

Each player deploying all of their armies at once would be grossly unfair to the player going last, and is not a workable solution.

I support the idea of a deploment phase

I understand the complications of lenght...

Which is why it should be an option while creating the game:

Random deployments - or take turns. (Each turn a player chooses a province and places 3 armies - which everyone else can see)

The first person who starts does not necessarily have an advantage in this case. Each player can roll a di, determining the sequence - or like in freestyle, whoever clicks "begin turn" gets to choose his first province.

The reason behind this:

I want to make campaigns for my friends and clan mates.

EX: we play the map of Germany with random deployment, and British Isles with random deployment. Or first, doing Irleand - whoever wins Ireland board gets to place all his armies on Ireland - leaving the rest of players to Britain. and whoever wins British Isles then places all his armies on Great Britain in European board.

Whoever wins the Germany board gets to place all his armies on Germany in the European map, leaving the rest of the members to to the rest of Europe.

Thus, trying to oppose the German/ English player by going 3 against 2 or 4 against 2... Diplomacy could be used between the person who won Germany and use one of the other players as a puppet - hoping he won't be backstabed.

So many possibilities....

Campaigns can get big - but be very fun. Which is why I vote that we allow the choice while creating a game between Random deployment and Chosen deployment.

i think i ment something completely different. first the countries are divided and then there is a black phase in wich you deploy (so it looks like everyone is deploying at the same time) after that phase you start. it will only take at max 24hours

Yes, although your way might be quicker, The deafult (but longer way) of doing it is more... "realistic"? or "do-able".

Point is, we should be allowed to choose where we want to deploy our troops.

and it should be a choice when we create a game.

Come on lets get more people on this topic.

Even if you don't like this idea. It can still be implemented as a choice when creating a game.
