Well, it had to happen eventually, and I actually think the Germans picked the right time. The problem was the failure to capitalize on antagonism against the Soviet regime. If they would have at least waited a while before beginning the annihilation of the Slavs, that could have precipitated a far warmer (not the temps, naturally) greeting (i,e. food, shelter, collaboration). The inflexibility of the German command system was what killed it. But if you think the Soviets and Nazis could have coexisted... the Nazis were nuts, but IMO the invasion of USSR was necessary

my turn:

What battalion is largely credited with freeing the rocky desert outcrop of Takrouna from the Germans and Italians after scaling the side of the mountain?
Bonus points for naming the company.

I think that one is a bit of an obscure question, since it didn't have a huge impact on the overall war - only on the Africa campaign.

It was 28 (Maori) Battalion, a handful of soldiers from B Company led by L/Sgt. Manahi (who assumed command after their officer was taken out of action) - it was they who first scaled the side of the sheer cliff face under heavy fire to clear the top for the others to follow up the main road to the hilltop.

no they wouldnt have been toast. they took foy with minimal casualties, then moved on to hagenou, after taking some small insignificant towns, again with minimal casualties. and the movie doesnt stay true to the book at some points. ill bring the book to school tomorow if you want to read it.

Because if Hitlers plans had succeeded it would have cut the allied army in two and might have forced them to make a deal with Hitler. Then Hitler could have focussed all his strength on the Russians.

And if it hadn't have happened the war would have dragged on even longer because the Germans lost a hell of a lot of their remaining panzers in the bulge.
