The Major..CC's Leanest, Meanest, Fighting Machine.

Postby Mr Changsha on Sun Jul 01, 2012 11:39 pm

We are considering here the player who by choice plays at the major rank. The player who spurns promotion, who laughs in the face of page 1 and yet quietly goes about his work of great destruction. He or she has probably already achieved their aims on CC and lurks malevolently in the shadows, always ready to rob a points-heavy colonel or brigadier of their hard earned spoils.

Here are ten reasons why it is best to be a major:

1. One can play trips or quads etc without feeling top-heavy. The major can play with say two captains or other majors quite comfortably, sure of his 20 points for a win. The 3000+ player invariably feels the need to add a striper to the mix...this increases the possibility of mistakes, or the need to hand-hold unduly.

2. Maintaining the rank of major comfortably (while playing whatever you like) is the 'CC-wide approved mark' of a good player.

3. One can feel able to join any game, there is no need to watch one's points and avoid 'playing for fun' as a major.

4. Within the large sequential standard flat world, the rank of major is the really the established high point. There is simply no need to play at a higher rank to get the 'high rank intimidatory effect'. No need to risk 40+ points in an 8 man standard. Furthermore, even the hat scares the horses to such an extent in these games that even having the rank of a colonel negatively affects results.

5.The rank of major says to the CC-world on mass ''I'm a good player but couldn't care less for the baubles of rank''. This is a good thing for general 'forum cred.'

6. Another advantage of being a major is that one can join a general or brig. for the odd game and maybe learn something new. No general is comfortable playing with a colonel or brig. for long..the points situation is, as we all know, desperate at these heights.

7. One can improve specific scores (say trips) by playing at the rank of major. Always gaining your 20+ points for a win greatly enhances specific scores.

8. One's EQ rating will always be healthy if the game is played at the rank of major.

9. Higher ranks have been known to underestimate the 'major-led team'. This can be key in the early rounds of a game...maybe the opposition don't quite give the game the attention it deserves..while the stealthy major is playing at 100 percent.

10. Playing for rank more than wins (if you see what I mean) is a never-ending trial. The points become everything. Playing as a major one can see that each individual game has an importance beyond points and maybe the victory is sweeter, as the win is not about being a small part of a much greater overall effort with regards to points, but simply about winning that game.

Understand that I am in no way attacking those that play for rank. It is perfectly fair enough. I am just making the claim that the rank of major is the best overall rank to be, and explaining why personally I have kept at this rank since 2009.

The part about forum cred translates real well when being a major. I can think of a few forum posters who were often criticized for one reason or another when they were above of below major, but once they returned they were seen as "one of the boys" and had a positive forum experience.

Changsa: You've been a major since 2009...so you've been a Major once in that time??? I've been there three times, down to corp no stripe once and everywhere in between more times than I can remember...spice of life and all tht??? Seems you've plateaued...I'd rather play ALL comers, starting nearly all as open to all,,,very few team games, no Clan and foe-ing no-one...sure it hurts to lose lots of pts when you're up but all the more pleasureable to plunder some noob high-fligher who joins a Term game to scalp easy points...live for the day, KILL for the moment!!!

What would be the point? I write of the true major, he who holds his rank effortlessly playing as he likes. Giving you points would create yet another common abomination here on CC: The Grasping Major A terrible breed this, straining every sinew to maintain 2000+, a grasping lower order with ideas far above their station. No, I write of a different kind of player. A different kind of man. One who would rather chop off his own arm and bugger himself silly with it than beg for points.

Effectively we can divide CC's ranks into two main parts (long-term forum readers will be aware of my strange obsessions in this area). We have TRUE brigs and GRASPING brigs. We have TRUE colonels and GRASPING colonels. And so on down the line. As you read this and naturally linger on that lovely little rank of yours you might consider whether you have to strain to keep it and to what extent. Frankly, if you know in your heart of hearts that you are working hard for that rank of yours, then be aware I consider you a grasping, nasty little undermunchen.

I tend to shoot over 2500, manfully reduce it back to 2200 and then begin the process again. It has been this way since 2009. I'm perfectly capable of playing a fair variety of games (standard, trips, dubs, 8 man dubs) and taking my points over 3000. I choose not to..for the reasons given in the original post.

Also please understand that I give absolutely no credit to reaching a rank. I write of holding it with absolute ease and aplomb. Sadly, each time you reach it you go down just a little more in my estimation.

No doubt you consider all this terribly unfair. But I simply have no respect for this 'playing a huge amount of games basically badly and then every once in a while blundering one's way to basic competence'.

It is an image that somehow both revolts, amuses and yet on some deep level arouses. Furthermore, for the type of man of which I write, it would be but a small price to pay to avoid the demeaning spectacle of begging for points demonstrated by BBS.

What a sickening post that was. While I basically piss all over your gaming record at least you haven't lowered yourself to BBS's level. He epitomises the grasping major (imagine a FARMING major...the horror!!!!) in that post.

Disgusting.

Jesus another 'let's obsess about our rank' thread. If you're good you accept challenges and can hold your own, if you're bad you try to convince others that you're good through talking about your rank.

I was a major once!! I know how to play!!!

Sorry Dibbun. What you are is a striper challenging a brig to pointless 1vs1 games in a desperate attempt to feel like you are good at this game, without actually maintaining a record that would deserve the name. You are about a million miles from making even your rank look effortless. You seem to strain to merely maintain your three stripes.

Also, not totally unsurprisingly, you have missed the point of this thread. My thesis (for I always have one) is that your rank is not simply a score or a label. The record that has led to the rank and how you hold that rank (most particuarly how hard or carefully you have to work to keep it) is the real indication of a player's skill.

Experienced CC'ers can check a player's record and see far more than a mere score or rank. They consider the variety of games, variety of maps, quality of opponents, complexity of styles and more. Therefore I ask you all to check your record against your rank and consider if you are a GRASPING (rank) or a TRUE (rank).

Quite simple, no?

Finally, for those (and they are legion) who say...

I play everything and anything so my score jumps about all over the place..but really I am tops.

I ask you to consider just how many games you have lost cheaply. How many games you have played badly. How many players have played you and thought..."He was easy to beat". Think about the incredible number of players who look at your name and think you weren't worth much at all.

For that's what a fluctuating rank says to me. Lots and lots of games where you played like crap.

Hey noob can you stop talking out of both sides of your ass?

I am someone who challenged a brig to a series specifically because he insulted me due to my rank. Here is the link to his original comment which prompted the callout.

Ironically (though probably not) his position in that thread is like yours, that 1v1s are excessively prone to "luck."

You can keep your bullshit rank because you're a rank whore, and that is obvious by you, like jefjef, using your rank to justify a failure to accept any sort of challenge which would not allow you to lean on your clan to win a game for you.

You're also a rank whore because you obsess over different ranks meaning particular things, like somebody being intimidated by a colonel or some shit. Get the f*ck out of here with that, you can pretend like you're some untouchable risk player but I'd touch you in a second if you had the balls to accept a challenge. Your rank doesn't mean shit to me because you expect kudos and admiration from the general CC morons but won't tolerate someone who knows that you're a bag of hot air. Keep your rank and I'll keep my pride in the fact that I'll take on anyone at any time. Noob.

I feel that your grasp on REALITY is not all that hot, Dibbun. You make such statements, but I really don't think they correspond all that closely to what is going on around you. I'm not going to go into detail, but I would ask you to read through your previous post and take an honest, hard, objective look at what you wrote. I think it would be a useful thought experiment for you. It would do you good in general. Please understand that while I could rip you into tiny little weeping shreds, I have a general policy of not launching on the incapable.

For of course this is a thread examining the waves and currents of CC. It is questioning (and this is not the first time I have penned such a thread of course) how we see this game. Naturally it will annoy some - though that is never my intention - and I apologise in advance for that.

The main waves and currents of CC is that people bitch about dice constantly, cry when they lose, rag on those with lower ranks, think they're somebody when they have a high rank, hide behind their clan, spam "gg" and other nonsense in games, and refuse to actually put their precious fucking points on the line to back their shit up when they talk trash to someone else.

Oh look at that I just identified what CC is using far less words than you.

But, you're a major, so apparently your life is absolutely bursting with meaning so it is unnecessary to try to find some by doing something as civilized as staying out of threads that don't concern you.
